Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the upcoming funeral services and ceremonies for the esteemed Frederick M. Reed Sr., who passed away on February 27, 2024, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was 88.

A visionary and pioneer in various fields, Fred Reed's life encapsulates a remarkable journey of dedication, leadership, and community service. His legacy reaches far beyond his time, leaving a lasting impact on those he touched through his roles in education, coaching, banking, and housing finance.

Born on December 13, 1935, in Washington DC, Fred embarked on a life that exemplified perseverance and passion for uplifting others. Graduating from Franklin & Marshall College in 1958, he went on to become the first African American teacher in the Lancaster City Public Schools, teaching Social Studies, English, and coaching various sports teams, at both Edward Hand Jr. High School and J.P. McCaskey High School.

Fred's lifelong commitment to education and community development led him to diverse roles, from curriculum development specialist to Head Football Coach at Cheyney State College. He was a beloved football coach and mentor in the Steelton-Highspire School District. He also spearheaded financial programs and housing initiatives that promote economic redevelopment while transforming lives and communities across Pennsylvania.

Fred Reed's relentless pursuit of excellence was complemented by his love for jazz, football, and teaching, shaping a multifaceted personality that inspired many. His enduring motto, "take what you have and run with it," epitomizes his resilience, adaptability, and unwavering spirit throughout his illustrious career.

Fred is survived by his loving family—his spouse of 63 years, Adele Reed, daughters Andrea Ackah of Harrisburg, and Allison Reed of Delaware, and son John Reed of Virginia, along with grandsons Sena A. and J. Sage Ackah, and great-grandson Sire R. Ackah, who carry on his legacy with pride and honor. He was preceded in passing by his eldest son, Frederick M. Reed, Jr.

To commemorate Fred Reed's life and legacy, a Viewing will be held at Charles F. Snyder III Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., 2421 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street, PA on March 8, 2024, at 10:00 am, with a Funeral Service will taking place at 12:00 pm. Interment to follow at East Harrisburg Cemetery in Harrisburg. Memorial contributions are encouraged to be made in Fred's name to the American Stroke Association .
