(Gantz) Green
June 13, 1935 – January 7, 2026
Evelyn C. (Gantz) Green, 90, of Atlantic City, NJ, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on January 7, 2026. Born June 13, 1935, in Lancaster, PA, she was the daughter of the late William Gantz and Helen Cooper Gantz. Evelyn moved to Atlantic City in the 1960's, where she married the love of her life, the late William Green, with whom she shared 57 years of life, love, and companionship.
Evelyn was known for her vibrant and outgoing spirit, and especially for her jokes. Everyone that met her wanted to be around her. As a child she played basketball for the Crispus Attucks and participated in the Drum and Bugle Chord. Evelyn was employed in Atlantic City at the PX Exchange at Fort Dix until she retired and then went on to work in food service at Martin Luther King Elementary in Atlantic City, NJ, where she loved working with her coworkers and the children. She loved the slot machines and would never step foot outside of the house if her hair was not done.
She was preceded in death by her sons, Leonard Gantz and Edmond Thomas, whom she loved very much. She is survived by her grandchildren, Teana Keith, Duane Hammond, Babette Hammond, Nicole Hammond, and Marcus Burns. Her great grandchildren, Glenn Hudgins, Ynnhoj Ivery and Imone Gantz of whom she raised, as well as a host of great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Alvin Gantz, Nathaniel Gantz, Gladys Dorsey, Beatrice Stewart, Charles L. Gantz Sr., and a granddaughter Annis Gantz "Cookie". As promised, she finished the job of caring for her sister Beatrice's children, who she claimed as her own. Chester Stewart and the late Joan Stewart (Ralph), Jeffery Stewart (Sandra), Helen Stewart, Kim Johonoson (Cleo), Doris Chambers (Ronald) and Brent Stewart (Monica). She will truly be missed by all.
A Homegoing Service will be held at Bethel AME, 450 E. Strawberry St. Lancaster, PA 17602, on January 17 beginning at 12 PM, with Pastor Stephanie Atkins. A viewing will be held at the church from 10 AM – 12 PM.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Hamilton Arms Center and Hospice of Lancaster for their expertise, compassion, and loving care of Evelyn.
