Obituary

Emanuel W. "Manny" Smith, 92, of Lancaster, passed away Thursday, December 12, 2013, at the Mennonite Home. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Isaac Abraham and Jennie H. Yablon Smith. Manny was married to H. Zelda (Dunie) Smith for 60 years.

Manny was a member of the first graduating class of J. P. McCaskey High School. He then served in the US Army in the European Theater of Operations during WWII with the 557th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion 84th Division. First Lt. Smith participated in the Battle of The Bulge and earned the Bronze Star.

Along with his brother Jack he owned and operated Lancaster Salvage Company, which their father founded. He was a member of Congregation Degel Israel. Manny owned and piloted his own plane at Lancaster Airport, and was a member of Lancaster Aero Club and Quiet Bird Man. He enjoyed sports cars and was past president of the Susquehanna Sports Car Club. Manny loved playing golf. In his earlier years he played harmonica with the Stagg McMann Trio.

Surviving in addition to his wife Zelda are his sister Rosaline Nixdorf and brother Jack H. Smith and companion Sue all of Lancaster and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Manny was preceded in death by his sister Norma Stein.

The Funeral will be held 2 PM Monday, December 16, 2013, at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543, with Rabbi Shaya Sacket officiating. The casket will be closed. Interment in Degel Israel Cemetery with Military Honors. Please omit flowers.
