IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Edward B.
Carskadon, Ii
July 30, 2017
Edward B. Carskadon, II, 74, passed away at his Manheim Twp. home on Sunday, July 30, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Champaign, IL, he was the son of the late Edwin B. and Gretchen Shumaker Carskadon. Edward and his wife Vicki Gobrecht Carskadon have been together for 11 years. Edward was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He found the time to impart wisdom, love, and joy to his family, friends, and coworkers throughout his life.
Edward, a graduate of Elizabethtown High, was active in school exhibiting leadership abilities as the Class President, receiving both academic and athletic honors. He graduated from American University in 1965 with a BA in Psychology and from the University of Pittsburgh in 1969 with a MA in Public and International Affairs. Edward completed Officer Candidate School in 1966 and served in the US Navy Reserves until 1969 on board the USS Glover, ADGE1, attaining the rank of Lieutenant JG. He worked in the Department of Public Welfare for 30 years, including the Office of the Secretary, retiring in 1997.
Having retired early, he devoted his time to volunteer activities like CONTACT, Hospice and Advoz (formerly Lancaster Mediation). Whether an organization or a friend was in need, Ed was there to assist. Sports, games, and exercise were always important to him, and Edward was an accomplished runner, tennis player, and golfer especially during his retirement. As E-Town Class President, he was in charge of planning reunions every five years. It was at their 45th reunion on the Pride of the Susquehanna that Edward enlisted Vicki to serve on the 50th reunion committee, sparking their relationship of 11 years and future marriage. He enjoyed many travels to foreign countries with his sister early in his retirement and special trips later with his wife.
In addition to his wife Vicki, Edward is survived by his son, Edward B. "Teddy" Carskadon, III, husband of Julia (Wickey) and their children Allegra and Ayrton Hall of Harrisburg; daughter Andrea (Armstrong), wife of Derek Grebinger and their son Grant Grebinger of Lancaster; son Douglas R. Armstrong, III, husband of Jessica (Fry) and their son Nolen Armstrong of Lancaster; brother Bruce M. Carskadon, husband of Linda (Rocci) of Moorestown, NJ and sister Mary Carskadon of Providence, RI; brother-in-law Gregory P. Gobrecht, husband of Judy (Shoemaker) of Elizabethtown and sister-in-law Terri, wife of Robert Bentzel of Harrisburg; and several nieces and nephews.
Edward's family will receive friends from 2 to 4 PM, followed by a celebration of his life at 4 PM led by Chaplain Nilda Roman on Saturday, August 19, 2017, at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Advoz Mediation & Restorative Practices (formerly Lancaster Mediation Center), 53 N. Duke St, Suite 303, Lancaster, PA 17602 or to Hospice & Community Care, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125.
