Obituary

Edgie Mae Johnson Butts, age 78, passed away on April 9, 2021 due to heart failure. She was born September 6, 1942 in Crisp County, Cordele, Georgia to Willie and Trudie (Cross) Johnson. She married Jessie Lee Butts, in Warwick, Georgia in 1959, who preceded her in death.

She received her education in Warwick, Georgia, from New Hope High School. After the birth of her three oldest children, she moved to Brooklyn, New York in 1965 where she lived until her death. She raised eight beautiful children with her companion, Walter M. Chisholm, who preceded her in death. She taught them to always respect and treat people with kindness.

She worked on various jobs like a cook in a restaurant, housekeeping, and caregiving. She enjoyed cooking and was known for her fried chicken. Also she was a seamstress who tailored many outfits for fashion shows always winning first prize.

She was baptized in Jesus name on July 26, 2009 by Pastor Richard L.Teris at the United Pentecostal Church of Lancaster. She was immersed in the Christian Community and for many years she was an active member of The New Beginning Ministry For All People with Bishop Albert Howard, Sr., until her health prevented her from participating. She loved to sing and was the head leader with brother Singelton of The Golden Keys. She also participated in many charitable events where she gave donations and helped feed the homeless. She was a devoted friend to many Pastors and Reverends, helping some with the process of becoming ordained ministers. Also she helps in planning many Gospel events.

Some of her most fun things to do was travel and attend her family reunions, something she looked forward to every year. She was the matriat for the Alice Cross branch. She loved to dress up and participate in singing a song or two and reminiscing with cousin Susie and her husband Harry about the good old times.

Edgie Mae was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She helped raise and babysit her grand and great grandchildren. She also would cook and feed many of her children's friends, and treated them as if they were one of her own. She always made you feel welcome to her home.

She is preceded in death by her sisters, Ethel, Almetia, Dorothy and Luella: her brothers Hayward and Junior: and her parents. She was blessed with a large and loving family.
