Dorothy Ann Haley, 87, died on July 5, 2008 at Moravian Manor, Lititz, following a long illness. Born in Salem, MA, she was the daughter of Edward J. Riley and Mary Flynn Riley.
Dot was a graduate of Salem High School and Simmons College, Boston. She was married to Bernard J. Haley and lived for many years in Short Hills, NJ. Her professional experience included serving as a Field Advisor for the Girl Scouts of America. She traveled extensively throughout the United Stated doing recruitment training and advising other professional staff. Dot was a member of the faculty at Upsala College, East Orange, NJ.
When Dot's husband was transferred by RCA in 1975 to Lancaster they moved to 368 Richland Drive. Dot soon became active as a volunteer in the Lancaster community. She served on several boards, including the United Way, LINC, Lancaster Day Nursery, Lancaster General Hospital and the Fulton Opera House. She served as President of the Women's Symphony Association and later as the first woman president of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra Board.
Dot served many years as a loaned executive for the United Way. In this capacity she visited many companies and organizations throughout the county, explaining the role of the United Way and soliciting contributions. In the year 1990, Dot was recognized as the Volunteer of the Year by the United Way.
Another organization that Dot actively supported for many years was the United Auxiliaries of Lancaster General Hospital and she served as President of its board. She had also chaired the annual Red Rose Day and the Decorator Show House benefit.
Her husband Bernard died in 1980.
Dot was a member of the Lancaster Country Club. Her church affiliation was with St. John Neumann Catholic Church. In July 2007 Dot moved to Meadow Ridge at Willow Valley and in May 2008 she moved to Moravian Manor. She is survived by a brother, Edward J. Riley, Marblehead, MA, two nieces and one nephew.
A memorial mass will be held at St. John Neumann Catholic Church 601 Delp Road, Lancaster, PA on Friday, July 11, 2008 at 10:00AM. Burial will be in Short Hills, NJ.
