Obituary

Doris Marie Varklet Strippel, 85, of East Petersburg, formerly of Chatham, NJ, passed away after a short illness on February 25, 2019 at Hospice and Community Care, just one day shy of her 86th birthday. She was married for more than 54 years to Richard Strippel, who predeceased her in 2015. Doris is survived by her two children: Carol Anne (Strippel) Wilson and her husband Brian, Christopher Strippel and his wife Jennifer, her grandson Scott Strippel and his wife Valerie, sister Jean Counts, brother John Varklet, five nieces and two nephews. In addition to her husband and parents she is preceded in death by three siblings; Marian Varklet, Dorothy Johnston, and George Varklett.

Doris was born in White Haven, PA, the third of six children, daughter of the late John A. Varklet and Anna (Wargo) Varklet. A career nurse, she specialized in obstetrics and later in geriatrics. After graduation from the Hazelton State Hospital School of Nursing, she served on staff there prior to a move to Texas, where she worked at the Houston Medical Center. Doris left Houston for New York State, where she was head nurse of the obstetrics division at White Plains Hospital. She retired from nursing in the late 1990s after more than 20 years' service at King James Nursing Home in Chatham, NJ.

After she and her husband retired to Lancaster County, her many pleasures included games of Mexican Train with her friends, bird-watching, completing crossword puzzles, reading and playing with her "grand-dogger," Nellie. She enjoyed theatre, concerts, and travel.

Her outgoing and upbeat personality led her to make many friends. If you had an entertaining conversation with a stranger in a parking lot, it probably was with Doris! She loved meeting people and took on any challenge. She will be greatly missed.
