Obituary

Charlotte May (Conn) Smith, 83, formerly of Fort Wayne, Indiana, departed this life for the heavenly Kingdom on August 30, 2018 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Born in Fort Wayne, she was the daughter of the late Sidney and Lucille (Fisher) Conn. Charlotte was the loving wife to the late William Mason Smith (Fr. George Smith). Charlotte was the second oldest child of seven who began her legacy of caring for those in need at a very early age. She graduated from South Side High School in Fort Wayne. She met her future husband, Bill, at Trinity Episcopal Church where they eventually married. Charlotte was a stay-at-home mother in the early years. She was instrumental in organizing groups to help those in need through the church or the community. She worked with other police officers' wives to support the police family of Fort Wayne. In her loving way she cared for many, both family members and others who were less fortunate and in need, in her own personal time and through volunteer organizations like Meals on Wheels. She made amazing cheesecakes that she gifted to others and donated for raffles time and again. Later in life, after joining the Orthodox Church, she travelled with her husband, Fr. George Smith, a supply priest in the Indiana Deanery. She enjoyed making friends, bird watching, reading, camping, cooking over an open fire, playing games, laughing, cleaning, finding the perfect gifts for others and travel. Her greatest joys were raising Susan and Stanley and later being Grandma to Jamie and Nicole. Charlotte is survived by her daughter, Susan Smith-Troy and her husband Bryce of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and her daughter-in-law, Nancy Smith, of Brighton, Michigan. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Jamie and Nicole Smith of Brighton, Michigan. She is survived by her six siblings, Lavon Heare, Helen Williams, Bob Conn (Doris), Dick Conn (Jane), Don Conn (Robin) and Jack Conn, her sister-in-law Gloria Guindon (Ed) and many beloved nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her son, Stanley Mason Smith. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 6, 2018, at 12:30 PM at the Dormition of the Mother of God Monastery in Rives Junction, Michigan, where a viewing will take place from 11:30 AM until the time of service. Charlotte will be laid to rest beside her husband in the Monastery's cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Dormition Monastery, 3389 Rives Eaton Road, Rives Junction, MI, 49277, or Hospice and Community Care, P O Box 4125, Lancaster,PA, 17604.
