Bernard J. "Bernie" Ziegler, 75, of Lancaster, Pa, passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2018. He was the husband of Jane L. Steinman Ziegler, with whom he celebrated 48 years of marriage this past May 10th. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Bernard J. Sr. and Florence Fitzgerald Ziegler. Bernie started his career as a Staff Accountant at the Ralph E. Stine and Co.. Bernie served in the administrations of Mayors Monaghan, Scott, Wohlsen and Morris as City Accountant for Lancaster from 1971 to 1987. In that capacity he was responsible for all fiscal matters for the city including preparing budgets and managing financials related to the General, Water and Sewer Funds and all other funds including Federal Community Development Block Funds. During his time with the city he served as a member of the administrative team negotiating all contracts with uniformed and non-uniformed employees. Bernie was most proud of his work in spearheading the effort of the City and the Lancaster Chamber to rescue the Spanish American Civic Association (SACA). Without the tireless efforts of Bernie, SACA would not have survived to play the remarkable role it performs today. Bernie served as Firm Administrator for Barley Snyder of Lancaster. In his role, he managed various functions at the firm including Human Resources, Finance and Operations. Prior to his retirement, Bernie was the Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President for Acer Engineers, Lititz, PA. He served on the Board of the Higher Education Authority and the Lancaster County Library as Treasurer and then President. He served on Mayor Stork's Ad Hoc Committee on City Finances from 1994 to 1998. He also served on the Allocation Committee of the United Way, Treasurer of Pennsylvania Local Government Investment Trust and Finance Chair of the Lancaster Alliance Committee. Above all his accomplishments, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend who was loved and cherished and will be greatly missed. Bernie was a 1960 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School and a 1964 graduate of Kings College. He then went on to serve in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War as a Staff Sgt. In addition to his wife, Jane, he is survived by his daughters, Traci L., married to Ian Swisher and Tammy L., married to Kenneth Price; his 5 grandchildren, Jared, Dylan, Cole, Adison and Kenna: and by his brother, James married to Ellie Ziegler of Lancaster. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Kenneth, and his sister, Rosemary Greiner. Friends will be received on Friday, February 9, 2018 from 6-8 pm at Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at St. Leo The Great Catholic Church, 2427 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, PA. Interment will follow in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Bernie's memory to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 100 W. Main St., Mountville, PA 17554.
