Obituary

Barbara D. Shultz, 80, of Manheim Township, passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at Lancaster General Hospital. She was a Gift of Life Donor to help others.

Barbara was born in Columbia, daughter of the late Sylvester F. "Bud" and Anna (Scantling) Devine. She completed St. Peter's Catholic School and graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School in 1961.

Barbara met her husband, Charles B. Shultz, III, while ice skating at Long's Park on January 10, 1962. Charlie was encouraged by his friend Don, who worked for LNP, to go skating on a very cold day to capture some photos for the newspaper, and Barbara went skating with a group of her girlfriends to try the new skates she received for Christmas. It was total serendipity on the ice for Charlie and Barbara. Charlie proposed to Barbara while sitting at the kitchen table with her parents present on June 10, 1962. They were married at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Columbia on August 18, 1962, and shared 61 wonderful years together.

She worked as a secretary and receptionist for various companies and retired from Walz Diem.

Deeply rooted in her Catholic Faith, Barbara worshiped with Charlie at St. Anne and Our Lady of La Vang Church. She volunteered with the Brown Bag Lunch program and on the funeral committee.

Barbara was previously active in Lancaster Women's Club, enjoyed playing cards with her card club, and was an avid reader of novels. She attended all her grandchildren's sporting events. She was a great baseball fan, cheering for the Barnstormers and Phillies.

Many vacations to Ocean City, MD, were enjoyed. A pizza aficionado, she loved ALL pizza, especially Grotto Pizza. Barbara always carried a pizza cutter in her purse but faithfully gave up pizza for Lent. She created several family cookbooks, with her specialties being stromboli, whoopie pies, chicken pot pie, and Peanut Butter Tandy Takes.

In addition to her husband Charles, Barbara is survived by their sons, Robert M. Shultz (Lynda D'Orazio), of Nampa, ID, and Timothy C. Shultz of Murrells Inlet, SC, daughter Stephanie A. Gingrich (Chris) of Lititz; four grandchildren, Benjamin, Carolyn, Bryce, and Cathryn; great-grandson, Logan; and her sisters, C. Ethel Lutz, Mary Boswa, and Eleanor Weisser, all of Columbia.

A visitation will take place from 10:00 to 11:00 am, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am with The Rev. Tri M. Luong as Celebrant, on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at St. Anne and Our Lady of La Vang Church. Interment will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at a later date.

Please omit flowers and kindly consider a contribution in Barbara's memory to St. Anne and Our Lady of La Vang Church, memo: Brown Bag Lunch, 929 N. Duke St, Lancaster, PA 17602.
