Obituary

Barbara Ellen Music, 95, of Lancaster, PA, died on October 27, 2017 at Brethren Village Retirement Community, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Born in Chanute, KS, she was the daughter of the late Frank Edward Isett & Barbara Allen (McNeely) Isett. Barbara was the beloved wife of the late John "Jack" F. Music, PhD. Barbara graduated from Van High School, Van, Texas in 1939. She was a member of the high school chorus, a soprano soloist, and a lead in many high school musicals. She was on the cheer squad and was an award-winning debater who went to States with a team led by her future husband, Jack. Barbara attended the University of Texas at Austin. After Barbara and Jack married in 1942, Barbara worked as an elementary school secretary and then as a secretary to the president of Motor Carrier Insurance Company while Jack completed his doctorate at University of Texas at Austin. After she and Jack moved to Richland, WA, Barbara began a life-time of volunteerism. She joined the League of Women Voters, chaired the League's State Voters Service, and sang in the Richland Women's Chorus. After moving to Berwyn, PA with her young family, Barbara became a Girl Scout leader, homeroom mother, and PTO President. She was an active member of the Church of the Good Samaritan, Paoli, serving on the Altar Guild and volunteering in the church gift shop. She needlepointed two of the church's "Seven Days of Creation" altar kneelers. Barbara also served as Vice President of the Paoli Memorial Hospital Auxiliary's Palm Tree Thrift Shop. During Barbara's tenure as President of the Woodlea Garden Club, she led the effort to repaint the vintage Berwyn Train Station. Her team from Woodlea Garden Club received an honorable mention for floral room design at the Philadelphia Flower Show. After relocating to Lancaster, Barbara helped serve breakfast at St. James Episcopal Church's Anchorage breakfast program. After joining Grace Lutheran Church, Lancaster, she was a founding member of Hope and Caring Group at Grace and brought Communion to the sick and homebound. Barbara also actively volunteered for the Organization for Responsible Care of Animals (ORCA) and for Women and Babies' Hospital. Barbara loved Broadway musicals and classical music, particularly opera. She created and maintained a close, loving, and supportive family that adored debating, swapping books, collaborating on joint projects, and exploring new ideas together. She never hesitated to rescue and adopt "hard luck" cats and dogs or care for many other animals that came her way. Her last pet, the legendary, one-eyed cat Captain Tiger, died at the age of 22. Throughout her long and fruitful life, Barbara wore many "hats": talented soprano soloist; insightful editor of her husband's and daughters' writing; gifted interior decorator; gardener and flower arranger; needle pointer; event planner; seamstress; bell collector; furniture refinisher and re-upholsterer; community leader; ballroom dancer; and "power walker". While she was a resident of the Courtyards at Brethren Village, she became an enthusiastic Bingo player, crafter, and "Sittercise" participant. Dramatic and beautiful, elegant and spirited, Barbara was the heart of her family. She will be deeply missed. Surviving are daughters: Barbara M. Andersen (Dr. Thomas) of Lancaster, PA and Elizabeth Ann Crowe (Doug) of Parkton, MD; 4 grandchildren: Barbara A. Rice (Gregory), Mark T. Andersen, Katherine E. Boyce (Sean) and Peter A. Crowe (Sarah); 2 great-grandchildren; a brother, Philip E. Isett; 2 sisters-in-law Betty Craft (Jack) and Ann Streetman (Ben); and many nieces and nephews. Barbara was preceded in death by stepbrothers: Donald G. Isett & Lauman D. Isett.
