Barbara Virginia Cameron; affectionately known as "Glamour Girl" and "The Diva" was born on July 11, 1939 in Mount Vernon Hospital, Mount Vernon, NY to Grace Margaret Wynn and Robert Ballard, Sr. (Both deceased). She departed this life suddenly from an unexpected illness on Sunday, January 7, 2024. Barbara transitioned to her Heavenly Father in the comfort of her home surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She was the youngest of three children; one sister Rosa Muse, and one brother Robert Ballard, Jr. (Both deceased).
Barbara received her education and graduated in 1957 from the Yonkers Public Schools System. She retired as a Teacher Aide both in Yonkers and Pennsylvania. Her passion, dedication, and love pertaining to the success of young people will never be forgotten by those she touched. Barbara was a foster parent to many in the Lancaster, PA community. These children were left with an impressionable mark by her that kept them in her life until her death.
Barbara lived a great deal of her life in Yonkers, New York. She was a member of the Mount Carmel Baptist Church and sang in the Senior Choir. Barbara was the organist and pianist for the Junior and Young Adult Choir. She also supported; with her musical talents, other choirs in the church and the community. Her talents reached throughout the City of Yonkers. She played for the Lawrence Kay, and Junior Choir of the Community Baptist Church. Barbara was the regular organist for the Brooks Memorial Funeral Home. Barbara also had a beautiful singing voice. She sang in a singing group entitled the Vestelles that performed at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York.
Barbara relocated to Lancaster, PA in 1989; living there for 34 years until her death. Upon her arrival, she joined the Brightside Baptist Church. Barbara graciously accepted the role as the Musical Director for the Junior Choir. She was instrumental in supporting the growth and development of the youth in the church. Barbara was a member of the Senior and BBC choirs. She also played for the Male Chorus. Barbara was a participant in Silver Threads and the V-Connection aligned with the Brightside Opportunity Center. Barbara was also a receptionist at the front desk supporting members and visitors.
Barbara is survived by four children; Loreen Patterson, Renee Mercer (Ronnie), Dr. Tracie Creighton-Thiam (Cheikh Sr.), and Pierce "Mike" Curry, seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two great, great grandchildren, two nieces, one nephew, several great nieces and nephews, a host of cousins, and many friends. Barbara is predeceased by her husband; Clarence Lee Cameron, who she was married to for twenty years. She is also survived by her "Beloved Sugar" who misses her dearly.
Her family invites guests to a viewing at 2 PM on Sunday, January 14, 2024, at Bright Side Baptist Church, 515 Hershey Avenue, Lancaster, PA 17603, with a funeral service honoring Barbara beginning at 3 PM. Interment will take place on Wednesday, January 17, at Oakland Cemetery in Yonkers, NY.
