IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Arthur "Art"
L. Young
May 29, 2022
Arthur "Art" L. Young, Lititz, passed away Sunday morning, May 29, at home after a strong-willed and courageous battle against chronic health issues of many years. He was 67.
Born in Brickerville, he was the son of the late J. Howard and Minerva (Adams) Young. He is survived by his sister, Charlotte Bauman (wife of the late Mark Bauman), Manheim; brother Terry (& Linda) Young, Ephrata; sister-in-law Letitia Young (wife of late brother Gerald "Jack" Young), Manheim; nephew Troy (& Jeseen) Bauman, Lititz; niece Cynthia Dinger, Palmyra; niece Tracey (& Charles) Ruzicka, Cooper, Texas; niece Terri (& Larry) Beiler, Manheim; niece Tina (& Duane) Ness, York; nephew Daniel (& Abigail) Young, Sinking Spring; and nephew David (& Erin) Young, Lancaster; and several great and great-great nieces and nephews.
An avid outdoorsman, kayaker, bicyclist and hiker, Art was a member of the Lancaster Hiking Club for over 20 years, whose members he considered as his second family. Many weekends were spent traversing and tenting in national and state parks, and organizing and participating in Hiking Club events and social gatherings.
Art had a passion for Native American culture and history. He considered one of his most important contributions to recognizing indigenous peoples in Lancaster County his years' long restoration and caretaking of a forgotten grave site of a Conestoga Indian couple from the late 1700s. Art's project to restore dignity and sacredness to this site was featured in LNP's The Scribbler column: https://lancasteronline.com/news/local/the-scribbler-penn-twp-man-memorializes-2-native-americans-who-lived-out-days-on-hershey/article_68b9327c-c08b-11e6-acb4-ab619d33112e.html
Art worked as a pressman for 27 years at R. R. Donnelly, Lancaster, before health issues forced an early retirement in 2012.
A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held for Arthur (Art) Lee Young at 2 PM on Sat., Oct. 8. 2022, on the weekend of Columbus Day/Indigenous People's Day as he requested, at the Native American gravesite that Art refurbished and maintained for a number of years on the Kreider Farms Homestead, Manheim, PA. Art passed away late this spring on May 29, 2022. Attendees should park in the lot of Kreider Farms Milk & Ice Cream Processing Plant, 286 Doe Run Rd., Manheim, where a shuttle will be available to transport guests to the field's edge. There will be no parking available along the lane that leads to the field from Doe Run Rd. Please plan to arrive early, at least by 1:45 PM, to have enough time to be transported to the site and be seated. Casual, comfortable dress and walking/hiking shoes are necessary, as the site is accessed by a few minutes' walk on a grassy aisleway at the edge of the field. The ceremony will be held under a large tent, rain or shine. A time of remembrances and stories from family and friends will substitute for a eulogy. Anyone attending is invited to voice remembrances of Art, how he may have impacted their lives, or other stories or comments. If preferred, for those who can't attend and want to share remembrances, or for those attending who would rather someone else read a written statement for them, they are welcome to email YoungServiceCoordinator@gmail.com and those remembrances will be read during that part of the program. There will be light refreshments and desserts afterward to continue fellowshipping together.
Memorial donations in his honor may be sent to assist Art's vision for a pavilion/gathering place for the Lancaster Hiking Club and may be mailed to: Lancaster Hiking Club Pavilion Fund, P.O Box 7922, Lancaster, PA 17604.
