IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Arlene
Sutherland
September 26, 2018
Arlene (Schwartz) Sutherland, 61, of Manheim, passed away from endometrial cancer on Wednesday, September 26th, 2018, at Rose City Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, while surrounded by her loving family. Born in Camaguey, Cuba and raised in Queens, NY, she was the daughter of Jack and Sara (Gonzalez) Schwartz. She took pride in her combination of both Jewish and Cuban heritage and made sure to pass that on to her family through celebrating every relevant cultural holiday and always cooking delicious foods.
Arlene graduated as valedictorian from her nursing school and she also graduated from Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, NY. She went on to work as an LPN for fifteen years in several hospitals and nursing homes in both New York City and Lancaster. She was always very caring and she always put other people before herself, which made her a great mother, a great wife, and a great nurse. She loved talking about her children and all of their accomplishments, and she always made sure to give them tons of love and encouragement. She had a silly sense of humor and an amazing outlook on life, despite her chronic illnesses, and she was loved by everyone she met.
She loved cooking delicious home-cooked meals, talking on the phone with her family for hours, telling corny jokes, listening to music, shopping, attending any local fun events or taking vacations, and spending time with her family. An avid reader as well, she was always well-educated on current events and news, but she also enjoyed reading for pleasure.
Arlene is survived by her loving husband, Richard Sutherland, of Manheim, with whom she shared 22 years of marriage, as well as her three loving children: Albert Schwartz of Fairview, Clifford Patriss of Manheim, and Christina Sutherland of Willow Grove. She was predeceased by her parents as well as her brother, Richard Minarik.
Arlene's favorite poem, which she had memorized, is included because her memory will last forever in the hearts of her loved ones:
"Into my heart's treasury I slipped a coin That time cannot take Nor a thief purloin Oh better than the minting Of a gold-crowned king Is the safe-kept memory Of a lovely thing."
Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
