Obituary

Alice Muth Cohen died at Willow Valley Lakeside in Lancaster, PA on October 31, 2017 after a short illness. She was born on August 25, 1924 in Reading, PA to Anna and John Muth, who emigrated from Hungary with their family in 1921. Alice was the last of seven children and the only sibling born in the United States. She was preceded in death by her three brothers, three sisters and her beloved husband of 35 years, CDR Robert A. Cohen MD. She is survived by two stepchildren, three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren.

As a young adult Alice and her mother moved to Bethesda, MD where she spent most of her life on Elsmere Avenue. Alice worked herself up the ladder in the Division of Intramural Research at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), where she served as executive administrative assistant to Dr. Seymour Kety and then Dr. John Eberhart. Alice retired from the Civil Service as an Administrative Officer in Human Resources at NIMH.

Alice loved travel and worked for months on an NIH project in Alaska. She and her husband Bob traveled the world, including a visit to the Seychelles, her favorite trip, and an Atlantic crossing on the Queen Elizabeth II. Alice was an excellent seamstress, an avid gardener, and a volunteer at the Smithsonian Gardens Greenhouse.

Above all Alice was always involved with, and held strong ties to her family. Her home, built by her three brothers' company Muth Brothers Builders, was the center of entertainment for most family events and parties. Alice will be remembered for her attention to detail and her hosting of the best happy hours and breakfasts. She could always be counted on to give you her honest opinion and support when needed.

A memorial ceremony will be held in the Spring of 2018 at Arlington National Cemetery, where Alice will be inurned with her husband Bob.
