Alfredo Gonzalez, 78, of Lancaster passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2017 after a courageous 20 year battle with Parkinson's disease. Born in Lares, Puerto Rico he was the son of the late Vicenta Rivera. He was the loving, devoted and caring husband of Carmen L. (Vargas) for 51 years. He lived in Brooklyn, NY before moving to Lancaster and was employed by the School District of Lancaster for many years. Alfredo was a longtime member of San Juan Bautista Catholic Church where he served twice as the president of the Holy Name Society. He also was a Eucharistic minister and volunteered for the CCD. He was a founding member and treasurer of the Lancaster Puerto Rican Parade committee. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Zulma N. Gonzalez companion of Keith Wilson of Mt. Joy, Lizzette Jones wife of David of Gainesville, VA, Claribel G. Cruz wife of Albert of Manheim and Alfredo Gonzalez, Jr., fiancé of Lourdes Vernet of Towson, MD. Also surviving are six grandchildren: Julian, David, Adrian, Benicio, Emilio, Elena and two sisters and one brother. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2PM on Friday, January 6, 2017 at San Juan Bautista Catholic Church, 425 S. Duke St, Lancaster, PA 17602. Interment to follow in Mellinger Mennonite Cemetery. A viewing will be held at the church one hour prior to the mass on Friday. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Alfredo's memory may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation, P.O. Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5014.
