Alfred (Al) Owen Ashman, Jr., 90, of Manheim Township, Lancaster, PA ended his journey on October 12, 2011 at Moravian Manor, Lititz, PA, following a courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease. Al was born on May 16, 1921, in Palmerton, PA, son of the late Bessie (Austin) and Alfred O. Ashman, Sr.
Al was a graduate of Palmerton High School, the Peddie School, and Bucknell University.
Al served his country during WWII in the 39th Infantry, 9th Division of the Army finishing as a 2nd Lieutenant. Al worked as an accountant for RCA for 37 years, both in NJ and in Lancaster, PA.
During his free time, Al enjoyed diving, sailing, skiing, square dancing, tennis and golf. In addition he was a self-taught musician, artist, sculptor and scrimshaw carver. Al raised his family in Summit, NJ, where all three of his daughters graduated from HS and where he was a founding member of the Crestview Club.
Al is survived by his wife of 64 years, Doris-Jean Ashman, his children, Dorothy Ashman, Linda, wife of Ernie Burkhart, and Virginia, wife of Michael Walsh, grandchildren Shiva and Benjamin Mandell, Jacob and Alicia Burkhart, and Ian Walsh.
Celebration of Life Services will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 2pm in the Chapel of the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pk. Lititz, PA. A viewing will be held at Snyder's from 1-2pm. Interment will be at 11am at the Towamensing Cemetery, Palmerton, PA on Sunday.
