Obituary

A. Joseph Homer, 70, of Lancaster, passed away on Wed. Sept. 4, 2013 at his home. He and his wife, Kathryn Minnis Homer, celebrated 43 years of marriage this past June 20th. Born in Harrisburg, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary Kucela Homer. Joe was a graduate of Millersville University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1964 and later a Masters Equivalency. He taught Life Sciences for the School District of Lancaster at Lincoln Junior High School for 31 years and coached basketball at the school as well. Following his retirement, he worked as a courier for Way Delivery Services and as a driver for Snavely and Dosch. A member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Joe served as an Extraordinary Minister, on the Social Justice Committee, with the RCIA Program and had earlier worked with the youth ministry at the church. He also participated in the Prison Christian Growth Group. Joe was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 867 where he organized the "Cans Club" the proceeds benefiting the Ronald McDonald House and A Woman's Concern of Lancaster. In addition to his wife, Kay, he is survived by his children: Anthony J. Jr. married to Tracy Homer of Neffsville, Maryellen H. married to Mark Brown of Charlottesville, VA, and Rosanne Homer of Lancaster; his 3 grandchildren Penny B. and Riley J. Homer and Annabelle F. Brown; and by his sister, Rose Marie married to Dennis Diem of Port St. Lucy, FL. Friends will be received on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013 from 930-1030AM at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 501 E. Orange St., Lancaster, PA 17602, with the Mass to follow at 10:30AM, the Rev. Daniel Mitzel as Celebrant. Interment in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Joe's memory to St. Anthony's Church at the above address.
