William H. Wimer, 98

William H. “Bill” Wimer, 98, of Lancaster, died Friday, January 26, 2007 at St. Anne’s Retirement Community after a brief illness.  Born in Lancaster, he was the husband of the late Catherine Culhane Wimer, who died on July 14, 1983, and the son of the late John R. and Cecilia Judith Wimer.

He worked for the General Cigar Co. for many years before retiring in 1973.  Before that he worked at the Lancaster Post Office and earlier at the Union Store on West King Street.  He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church for more than 45 years serving as an Extraordinary Minister of Communion and as President of the Senior Citizens Club.  He coordinated trips for the seniors for many years and was instrumental in sponsoring bingo for the residents of St. Anne’s Home.  He enjoyed playing cards, woodworking, traveling, family gatherings, and following the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team.

He will be lovingly remembered by his son, William J., husband of Janet Heagy Wimer of Lancaster; four grandchildren, David W. of Sinking Springs, PA, Brenda Cline of Jefferson Hills, PA, Beth Ferguson of Narberth, PA, and Daniel W. of Ringgold, GA; 11 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are 5 sisters, Mary Musser of Mennonite Home, Lancaster, PA, Theresa Zander of Millersville, PA, Romaine Frymyer, Dorothy Blessing, and Joan Bireley, all of Lancaster, PA.

He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Richard F. Wimer and John M. Wimer and two sisters, Jane Leed and Judith Houck.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Funeral Mass at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church at 11 AM on Tuesday, January 30, 2007, with Rev. Michael Grab as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery. There will be a public viewing at the church on Tuesday morning from 9:30 AM until the time of the service.  In lieu of flowers, those who desire may send contributions in Bill’s memory to St. Anne’s Retirement Community, 3952 Columbia Ave., Columbia, PA 17512 or to Hospice of Lancaster County, P.O.
