Virginia Campbell Webster, 94

Virginia Campbell Webster, 94 of Lancaster formerly of Rochester and Beaver Falls died Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at Hospice of Lancaster County Mount Joy Center. Virginia was widowed in 1966 when her husband, Thomas A. Barber died. In 1977, she married Arthur D. Webster and moved to Lancaster.

Virginia’s family played a prominent role in the growth of the Rochester area.

Her grandfather, Joseph Richardson Campbell moved there prior to the Civil War and was a riverboat captain sailing out of Rochester. Virginia’s father Robert Craig Campbell founded and was president of the Monaca National Bank in Monaca, Pa. His brother Joseph Craig Campbell founded and was president of the Bank of Rochester. He and his brother, Joseph built the Campbell building in Rochester.

Virginia was active in Beaver County doing charitable works including the county orphan’s home. In 1940’s she began a campaign, “Clean Up, Pick Up, Keep It Up”‘ to fight litter. She took this message to all three grade schools and spoke to all of the little children. Virginia grew and planted Forsythia around all the public buildings including the Carnegie Library in Beaver Falls.

The superintendent of schools, asked her to substitute teaches, and she was so successful that he asked her to stay on full time. Although she had not entertained the idea of being a teacher, she moved forward and became head of the English Department in the Beaver Falls High School.

Her passion was literature and she adored the language of Shakespeare. Virginia attended Allegheny College and transferred to Geneva College where she graduated and went on to the University of Pittsburgh for her Master’s degree. She graduated with honors.

Her survivors include: Jane “Jebby” Potter, Sewickley, PA, Dr. Thomas Campbell Barber, Hatboro, Pa, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at Homestead Village Commons, 1800 Village Circle, Lancaster PA on Friday, July 9, 2010 at 10:00AM with Rev. Ann Osborn officiating. Interment will be private. To send online condolences, please visit SnyderFuneralHome.com

My thoughts and prayers are with you as you remember the life and death of Virginia.

When Virginia and Art were residents on Murry Hill Drive, they would come to our home for me to do sewing alterations for them. They were a very charming and interesting couple and we would spend time reviewing our week’s activities, what our family activities were and what Harold was growing in our backyard garden.

After their move to Homestead Village Virginia would call for me to come to the apartment and help her get her clothes to fit properly. She and Art were special people to me. I will miss Virginia.

Sincerely,

Mary Ann Kimmel
