Vermelle R. DeFranco, 87

Vermelle R. DeFranco, 87, of Millersville, passed away Monday, July 23, 2012 at St. Anne’s Retirement Community. Born in Lancaster, PA she was the daughter of the late Ira C. and Pauline (Weidinger) Althouse. She was married to the late Louis R. DeFranco who passed away in 1988.

Vermelle was a homemaker and took pride in being a caretaker for many family and friends. She was a former member of the St. Philips Women’s Auxiliary Club and the Guys and Dolls Club of St. Philips. She was a member of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church in Millersville.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen S. Haas, wife of Scott B., of Millersville.  Five grandchildren: Tamara L. Carlson, Keith A. Gross, Kimberly A. Griest, Krista D. Haas, and Steven B. Haas. Also surviving are four great-grandchildren: Kaghen A. Gross, Ryan L. Carlson, Billy E. Carlson, Lydia M. Sylvester and a sister, Dorothy Leike, of Parkesburg, PA. She is preceded in death by 2 daughters, Pauline A. DeFranco, Sharon L. Gross widow of Robert and one great-grandchild, Tierney M. Gross. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at St. Anne’s for the support and care for Vermelle.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 3PM on Thursday, July 26, 2012 at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster, PA 17603 with Rev. Mark E. Weiss as Celebrant. A viewing will be held at the church on Thursday between 2-3PM. Interment will be private in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Vermelle’s memory to St. Anne’s Retirement Community, 3952 Columbia Avenue, Lancaster, PA 17603. Vermelle was in our Thurs. card group for 45 some years.  I enjoyed being with her.  I remember one time noone could play a certain Thurs. so we went to Lombardos, had a great time and a great dinner. God bless her Soul.

Kathy and family.  So sorry for your loss.  I remember Vermelle back from the days of Duke Convalescent Residence when I worked there and she would visit her mother there.  We may lose our loved ones but the memories live on forever.  Please accept my deepest sympathy.

I will always remember Aunt Vermelle’s kindness and warmth to me.I can still hear her laugh(you share it with her).
Now she is reunited with Uncle Lou.They can both watch over us as we continue our journey.
