He graduated from Lampeter-Strasburg High School in 1963 and from Thaddeus Stevens Trade School in 1966. He married his high school sweetheart, Karen Sue Brown on September 10, 1966. Tim entered active duty in the United States Navy aboard the USS Hugh Purvis DD709.

Upon honorable discharge, he was employed in the telecommunications industry for his entire life at companies including Bell Telephone of PA, American Telephone and Telegraph and retired from Lucent Technologies after 31 years. After retirement, he contracted for R.R. Donnelley working on their telecommunications equipment for 11 more years.

Tim was a member of Calvary Church, where he served in the Children’s Ministries until his illness. Tim loved the outdoors and was Assistant Scout Master in Boy Scout Troop 267 for more than 30 years. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow, graduated from Wood Badge and was honored with the Harvest District Award of Merit. He was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers.

Tim is survived by his wife Karen Sue; two sons, Matthew William Hammel, married to Heather (George) of Hallam, and Nathan Peter Hammel, married to Traci (Homsher) of Quarryville; two grandsons, James William and Michael Evan Hammel of Hallam; and his mother-in-law Mildred Weaver Brown of Woodcrest Villa. In addition to his parents, Tim was preceded in death by a grandson, Joseph R. M. Hammel and step-father Irvin Tucker.

Dear Karen, Matt and Nathan! We are so sorry to hear of Tim’s passing. We are praying for your strength and peace in these sad and difficult days. May the many wonderful memories of good times begin to replace the void he has left in your hearts.

The joy of knowing Jesus is real! I worked with Tim and handed over to him the work at RR Donnelley. I also played basketball on the Bell Tel team. He was a joy. He would come into work stating he camped overnight in the middle of the winter with the scouts. Crazy!! A broken foot keeps me home but my heart is there at the memorial service.
