Shirley Kadushin

Shirley Kadushin died unexpectedly in Atlantic City, New Jersey on August 3, 2010. She was born in Passaic, New Jersey, July 26, 1920, and recently celebrated her 90th birthday.

Mortimer, husband of 64 years, died in 2006. She is predeceased by her parents, Sadie and Hyman Levine, immigrants of Russia and Poland; brothers Abraham and Leon Lanson; sisters Loretta Ackerhalt and Jean Greenberg. She is survived by her children Mona Kadushin Berch (Mark), Stephen E. Kadushin (Kerry), Marian R. Kadushin (George Sotos ); by grandchildren Laura (Eric) Parsons, David Kadushin, Joshua Berch (Dinah Goldberg/fiancé ), Ezra Berch, Kelly (Joe) Westcott, Andrew Miller; a great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces, nephews, and their families.

Shirley was well-loved as a wife, mother, devoted sister, aunt, grandmother, mother-in-law, and great-grandmother.

She grew up in Glen Rock, NJ, and graduated from Eastside High School in Paterson, NJ and Eastman School, NY, for Spanish Business Translations. As a young adult she worked in her family’s Service Surgical Supply business in Paterson, NJ. She became the “official” ice cream taste-tester for the Milky Way Ice Cream Bar owned by Mortimer during the early 1940’s. After their marriage, she worked at West Point during World War II where Morty was stationed with the military. Shirley and Mortimer were owners of Allied Surgical Supply, North Duke Street, Lancaster, a company started by her husband and William Reifsnyder in 1948, where, amongst other jobs, she was the purchasing officer and was certified to fit and customize surgical garments.

Shirley volunteered over 4000 hours as a Red Cross Grey Lady at Lancaster General Hospital and was a volunteer with Jewish Family Service. She was active in Temple Beth El Sisterhood, a life member of Hadassah, a lifelong member of Temple Beth El and the Lancaster Jewish Community Center, as well as an active participant of the Jewish Women’s Bowling League. Shirley and Morty were honored by many Lancaster organizations for their contributions to the community.

She was blessed by a wonderful group of family and friends.  Shirley and her laughter will be sadly missed.

Dear Mona, Stephen, and Marian,
I was saddened by the sudden death of your Mother, and want to tell you how much I will be thinking about all of you and your families in the days to come.   You planned a beautiful tribute to your mother in today’s service.  Your Mother’s life was described in a loving way, bringing back many memories of your parents and of the years my Mother and I babysat for the three of you.  Your Mother and Father were truly faithful to their religious convictions and in service to the community throughout the years, and your family will always be special to me.  God be with you !

Love,
Beverly Styer Martin
