Russell P. Schreiber, 94

May 04, 2020

Russell P. Schreiber, 94, of Lititz, went home to his Lord and Savior on May 4, 2020, at Luther Acres. Born in Quarryville, he was the son of the late Charles D. and Anna (Pollock) Schreiber and the beloved husband of Evelyn (Fletcher) Schreiber.

Russell graduated from Millersville University and taught Industrial Arts in Collegeville, Pa., for five years before becoming a co-owner and architectural millwork estimator at Keath Planing Mill, now Lititz Planing Mill. He retired at the age of 89 but kept working on projects as a consultant.

Russell had an eye for detail and design. A master woodworker, Russell was able to sketch designs that he would see in shops and make exact replicas at home. He made beautiful furniture for his family and friends, including chairs, hutches, and grandfather clocks. He enjoyed traveling to Colonial Williamsburg to admire the history and antique construction, as well as to the mountains, where he would harvest wild watercress for Evelyn and himself. Nothing tasted better to him than a watercress sandwich and a heaping bowl of ice cream. Any ice cream would do, but Haagen-Dazs coffee ice cream was his favorite.

Throughout his life, Russell was involved in many organizations. He participated and was past president of the Lititz Lions Club, cubmaster for Pack 44, Boy Scouts of America, a PIAA basketball official, and past president of the Millersville University Alumni Association. In coordination with the Lititz Lion’s Club, Russell drove and delivered for the Lititz area Meals on Wheels for many years.

Russell was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Lititz, since 1953. A devout Lutheran, he volunteered as a Sunday school teacher, was a member and past president of the church council, and served as chairman of the building committee. A part of Russell lives on in the church that he loved in the cross that hangs in the sanctuary and the processional cross, both of which he crafted.

Russell will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 71 years, Evelyn; his son, Jeff Schreiber (Jeanine); and daughter, Becky Marks (David). He is also survived by five grandchildren: Amy Allwine, Andrew Allwine (Michaela), Emily Marks, Brandon Schreiber (Kristen), and Brooke Maharg (Christopher); seven great-grandchildren; Jaiden, Jessa, Ryan, Evelyn, Zachary, Zion and Hazel; his exchange student “daughter” from Argentina, Elvira Theiller; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers, Lester, Robert, Harold, Wayne and Charles.

Services and interment will be private. Please omit flowers. Memorial donations can be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 200 W. Orange St., Lititz, PA 17543, or to the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, PA 17603.

Evelyn and family, Cyndy and I were saddened to hear of Russ’s passing. I was always impressed with his energy, exemplified by his lengthy employment at Lititz Planing Mill, and his service with Lititz Lions. We valued his friendship (and yours) and although we are now rather far away geographically (in Kentucky), our best wishes go with you and your family.

Mrs. Schreiber, While I only got to know Russel after you bought the adjacent cottage at Spring Lake, I soon learned that he was a genuinely good person.  Lynn and I enjoyed those summers when you and Russ where our ‘weekend neighbors.’  Sorry for your loss.

My very best wishes to the Schreiber family.  Russell was one of the most honorable men in my young life in Lititz, and an exemplary role model for every young man in our community.  He is sorely missed, and will always be remembered fondly.

Pam and I wish to convey our deepest sympathies to Evelyn, Becky, Jeff, family and friends. There simply just isn’t enough good and graciuos words to describe Russ. Mentor, counselor, leader, co-worker, friend. Having the good fortune of knowing Russ since Jr. High and later working with him for 35 years was a true blessing. When my Father passed in 1985, Russ was there. Knowing Russ for almost 50 years I have many fond memories of him and in my younger days Jeff, Becky, and Evelyn included.

Presently, almost everyday, I look after the building needs of the church Russ helped build. Ocasionally Russ would pull me aside at the “Mill” and off we went to the St. Paul. Russ had another project for me. The best of all was the cross. He had a simple drawing and asked me to plan and build it. Upon completion he could hardly wait to install it. Everyday when I see that cross hanging from the ceiling in the St. Paul Sanctuary, I will always think of Russ and smile.
Respectfully, Tim Miller

May 10,
So sorry to hear of Russ’s passing. He truly leaves a great legacy at St. Paul’s, Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center and with all he came across in life. Russ was truly an ambassador for Christ in this world as he was always ready to give of himself for others. He and Evelyn are also a wonderful example of what marriage should be. Nancy and I will never forget him.

We were very sorry to learn of Russ’s passing. We admired his commitment to his faith and respected his many contributions to St. Paul. He and Evelyn were truly role models for us when we joined St. Paul’s approximately 24 years ago.
On a more personal note for me (Don), Russ was someone who was there for me in an unexpected way during an unexpected hour of need. He was truly heaven sent much to my benefit. I will always remember him for his kindness and wisdom in that moment of my life. Somehow God placed him there for me at that time and I will be eternally grateful for his presence. I share this story for the family as I have no doubt that Russ touched many lives that his family may not even know.
