Robert G. Herzer, 91

July 30, 2019

Robert G. Herzer, 91, of Luther Acres, passed away Tuesday, July, 30, 2019, at UPMC Pinnacle, Lititz. He was born in Ephrata to the late Bernard and Mary (Stautler) Herzer. Robert celebrated 69 years of marriage with his wife Mary “Margaret” (Smith) Herzer on June 17th.

A 1946 graduate of Ephrata High School, Robert entered the US Navy and served for two years at the end of WWII. When discharged from the Navy, he enrolled in machine shop education at Stevens Trade and then completed his apprenticeship at Precision Machine Company in Lancaster.

Robert worked at Alcoa as a tool and die maker for 15 years and attended night classes at Temple University for 7 of those years, earning a Master’s in vocational education. He then taught machine shop at Willow Street Vo-Tech for 23 years. In retirement, Robert worked part-time as maintenance manager for Manheim Township School District.

An active member of Lititz Moravian Church, Robert served on the Board of Elders and as Treasurer of the Men’s and Women’s Bible Class. He also served as an Usher for church services and as a Dierner for the Love Feast.

Robert was active in BSA Troop 42, Lititz, for 37 years, including being Scout Master. Scouting activities like hiking at Philmont Scout Reservation, and sailing and scuba diving in the Bahamas ultimately inspired him to become a teacher.

He also enjoyed bicycling rail trails, with Lehigh Gorge State Park and North Bend State Park, WV, being two of his favorite places to ride. Robert was an avid kayaker as well.

He volunteered in the community serving on the Lititz Springs Park Board for 20 years and being involved in the construction of the Welcome Center and helped obtain the Caboose for the park. Robert also volunteered at Moravian Manor driving the resident’s bus for concerts, bowling and fishing outings. At Luther Acres he drove the inside cart and volunteered in the wood shop, making various items for the bazaar.

A real people person, Bob was very friendly with everyone.

In addition to his wife Margaret, Robert is survived by their 4 sons, Kent G. Herzer, Lancaster, Karl R. Herzer, Mount Joy, Kurt B. Herzer, husband of Sue (Supplee), New Holland, and Kevin L. Herzer, Elizabethtown; 5 grandchildren, Karyn, wife of Daniel Fetzer, Lancaster, Troy Herzer, Myerstown, Kyle Herzer, husband of Abby (Harnly), Akron, Zachary Herzer, husband of Melyssa (Hamm), Manheim and Dylan Herzer, Elizabethtown; and 4 great-grandchildren, Skylar, Micah, Evelyn and Amelia Herzer.

I had the privilege of serving on the Lititz Springs Park Board with Bob in his last term.  He was always finding things to improve and repair and  also finding projects for Kurt to get involved in, especially Fourth of July electrical needs in the Park. He was a willing servant there and a dear neighbor to me.  I will forever remember his kind heart and his lovely smile! I join you, Mary Margaret and family, in mourning Bob’s passing.  He left us better people.

Bob Herzer was such a remarkable man – genuine, upbeat, humble, hard-working, fit, strong in his faith…. The list goes on.  He was a positive role model for many.

While he was a trusted leader, he was always willing to develop, empower, and entrust others. On a rafting trip with a group of Scouts on the Youghiogheny River when I was in my early teens, partway down the river I was surprised when he gave me an opportunity to guide the raft for the first time. Serving on the Lititz Springs Park board, he provided ideas and guidance for a Scout service project. He was selfless and very giving of his time and talents.  He was a familiar face at church, and I can still picture him carrying a large tray of mugs during the Love Feast.

I always admired his spirit. In describing his love of cycling, he once told me of a time he stopped into a bike shop close to the Lehigh River valley and enquired about a bike trail. The employee looked at his gray hair and said, “Sir, you know that’s an advanced trail?” In classic Mr. Herzer style, he just smiled and said, “Yes, I know.” I can still hear his laughter. I hope to be as active as he was into my later years.

He will be deeply missed. His spirit will live on in the lives of those he touched and will forever be a part of our future adventures and endeavors and the legacy that we will pass to the next generation.

Mr. Herzer was my shop teacher at vo-tech he was tough but fair, he touched many students lives and I had the pleasure to talk to him, a few years ago and tell him what a differance he made in my life. He always found his students jobs, and sure did like his coffee. I also worked over the summer with Bob as my supervisor at Willow street, Every Friday he would take all of us to Twin Kiss for Ice creme. In fact I would ride my skatebord to Engleside bride and he would pick me up and take me to work. Bob was a wonderful man and will be missed, he sure did make a differance in many lives and left this world a better place because he lived, R.I.P. Mr Herzer.

I taught with Bob at Willow Street Vo-tech.  As an Industrial Arts student at Millersville, with experience in the machine shop, I wanted to student teach at Vo-tech. We discussed this possibility with Bob and Don Greenawalt.  They agreed to allow me to student teach with them. As I understand this was a first in PA. Later, when Don left teaching, I took his place teaching in the shop with Bob. We taught together for 4 years until I went to Stevens Tech.
Bob was a very good teacher. He had high expectations of his students and coached them to do more than they imagined they could. Many of his students were successful, at least partially, because he encouraged them to do more than average work. He always wanted them to be the best they could be.
I enjoyed working with Bob and was encouraged by his seemingly endless energy. We shared interests in Boy Scouts as well as many other things.  Working with Bob was one of the highlights of my career.
