Richard J. Haines, 74

Richard James Haines, 74, of Lancaster and formerly of York, died on August 1, 2006 of natural causes.

Mr. Haines was predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Adelle. He was father to seven children: Richard Jr., Michael (deceased), Virginia Bednarek, Robert, John, Raymond, and Thomas. He will also be remembered as a loving grandfather of 14 and great-grandfather of one. He is also survived by his sister, Irene Gotwalt.

Mr. Haines retired from a managerial position from the United States Postal Service after 29 years of dedicated service. Prior to joining the USPS, he served proudly in the US Navy and served in combat in Korea. He continued his support of fellow veterans as the Commanding Officer of American Legion Post 1771. Mr. Haines was also a co-founder of a Brooklyn, NY based community newspaper, The Greenpoint Gazette.

After surviving cancer, Mr. Haines was a volunteer driver for cancer patients to get to their doctor appointments and treatments. He will be missed by his loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 501 E. Orange St., Lancaster, on Saturday, August 5, 2006 at 11AM. Interment in St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery. Friends may be received at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home, 414 E. King St., Lancaster, on Friday from 2-4PM and 7-9PM and again on Saturday from 9:00-10:30AM at the funeral home. Memorial Contributions may be made in his memory to the American Heart Association, 610 Community Way, Lancaster, PA 17603.
