Richard F. Shissler Sr., 83

Richard F. Shissler Sr. (“Shorty,” ” Dick”), 83, of Lancaster died January 3, 2008 at Pleasant View Retirement Community. He enjoyed his retirement for the past 25 years, by doing home improvements, odds and ends of jobs, gardening, growing tomatoes for all his neighbors. He enjoyed horse racing, and playing the lottery.

Richard was the son of the late Harold A. and Carrie Brener Shissler.

He was married for 63 years on April 25, 2007 to Nancy Mae Heiler Shissler who preceded him in death by 38 days.

He retired from Kerr Glass, formerly Armstrong Cork Co. on New Holland Ave, where he was known as Shorty. He was a World War II veteran serving in the navy. His ship the SS Yorkmar was sunk in the North Atlantic 475 miles off the southern coast of Iceland with a crew of 67, 13 died and 54 survived. They floated in the North Atlantic until picked up by a Canadian Vessel, 2 hours later.

Surviving are two daughters; Bonnie L. Fahringer companion of Henry (Hank) Tobias of Manheim, Cheryl A. wife of Greg S. Carmany of  Mount Joy, a son, Richard F. Shissler Jr. of Lancaster, seven grandchildren; Beth Kamerman of Iowa, Scott husband of Angela Kamerman of York, Gail Hunter of Lancaster, Jill wife of Jason Repamonti, of Maytown, Blake Shissler of Lancaster, Brie wife of Rodney Garber of Mt. Joy, Shea Carmany of Mt. Joy, two great grandchildren; Jorney Alber of Iowa, Christian Kamerman of York, and a sister, Doris Shissler Risser of Stevens. Richard was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Shissler and two sisters; Ruth Shissler Schroder, Betty Shissler Franciscus.

A memorial service will be held at Pleasant View Retirement Community, 544 N. Penryn Road, Manheim on Monday, January 7, 2008 at 7:00PM. Flowers will be received or contributions may be made in Richard’s memory to Southern Care Hospice, 340 Highland Drive, suite 200, Mountville, PA. 17554. Arrangements made by the Charles F.
