Richard F. “Dick” Fisher Jr., 82

June 13, 2020

Richard (Dick) Frederick Fisher Jr., fondly known as Uncle Dick, joined the ranks of the redeemed early the morning of June 13th.

Dick was born in Lancaster City in 1937, to the late Richard and Laura (Boettger) Fisher.

A graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School, he would go on to attend Franklin and Marshall College and graduate with a degree in Accounting. Dick first went to work for the KMART corporation before working for the United States Department of State for more than 20 years. Although he would officially retire in 1994, he continued to help where he could with his final assignment through the Department with the Bureau of African Affairs. Dick loved to spend time between his home in Lancaster, PA and his home in Washington, D.C.

Dick had a lifelong passion for traveling, with an extensive list of countries he visited. He was proud to have visited all continents but Antarctica, which he had gotten within sight of.

When Dick was state side, he could often be found spending time with his many good friends at the Hamilton Club in downtown Lancaster. For anyone who knew Dick, their memories with him often included good food, a good drink, and a good story. He brought a special presence to any gathering that will be greatly missed.

Dick is survived by his Brothers in-law, Bob Hollister and Rick Kuster, as well as a sister in-law Ruth Fisher. Dick will also be missed by his nieces and nephews, Bobby (Jennifer) Hollister, John (Kelly) Hollister, Christine Hollister, Buddy (Amanda) Hess, Amy (Derrick) Millhouse, Janet (Eric) Renfer, Bryan (Bridget) Kuster, Andrew Kuster, and Matthew Kuster; and his great-nieces and nephews who loved afternoon visits with him. He will also be greatly missed by his lifelong friend Christiane of Orléans, France.

He was welcomed into the kingdom of the Lord by his parents, and two sisters Jeanne Kuster and Caroline Hollister, and a brother Jerry Fisher.

A Memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 1st at 11:00 am at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, Lancaster. Visitation with the family will be at 10:00 am prior to the service. Interment will follow at St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery, Bausman.

In lieu of flowers please consider making donations in Dick’s name to Lancaster Catholic High School, Office of Advancement, 650 Juliette Ave, Lancaster, PA 17601 or to Franklin and Marshall College, Office of College Advancement, PO Box 3003, Lancaster, PA 17604.

Sad to learn of Dick Fisher’s passing on. I knew him well during his time in Nairobi, Kenya.
Dick was a lively person and his presence was felt with his loud laugh, his love for good drinks and cigars.
May the Almighty rest his soul in eternal peace 🙏

I will always miss Dick Fisher. Before 2002 till he passed, we have been communicating twice every month; He never missed returning my calls. I knew something was wrong when I called him in July 2020, he did not pick up or returned my call. He was one of the nicest American I met that made a big difference in my life. I met him in 1992 at the U.S. Embassy Monrovia when he came to audit my Finance Department. He was great man that will be surely missed. May his soul rest in perpetual peace.

I just learned  of Dick a/k/a “The Fish” passing. I meet Dick  just after he retired from the State Department and he lived with me for several months while he  got his retirement straightened  out at the mother ship. I rented Dick’s apartment out for years and he always stayed with me when he was in town.
My mother Ruby (who died in November of 2019) was also great friends. I am sorry I wasn’t aware of his funeral. The only reason I did know about it is  that I sent him a menu from a NYC restaurant, he loved to collect menues and it was returned. I knew something was wrong. If Ican be of assistance down here in Washington, please let me know.

I’m sorry that I could not attend the memorial service. Dick was a friend whom I met through the Hamilton Club. We shared a love for cigars, food and drink. Our road trips to his favorite eating estabishments were near legendary and will be sorely missed without Dick. I am still rattled by his dieath as I had him over my house for cigars on the patio just two weeks before he passed. I wish the family peace. Rest in peace, dear friend.

Forty years of laughter and professionalism.  I first met Dick in 1980 when he was assigned to Abidjan, Ivory Coast as Regional Budget Officer.  Other African assignments took him to Nairobi and Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.  Dick was a great organizer and was the first officer to consolidate a Budget Workshop attended by all embasssies in sub-Sahara Africa.  We traveled together often and I was always amazed how Dick knew every “special place” in Paris for fine dining or that special drink.  Someone will inherit his vast collection of “menus” from around the world.  Just a few weeks ago, I encouraged Dick to write his memoir.  Now he will have the time.  I’ll have to wait to read it.  Chuck

Words cannot express the sadness I feel. Dick was one of my husband’s (Dan Reilly) best friends and became mine as well. Even though my husband passed away over 10 years ago, Dick was always there for me. He visited me in Florida often.  I will miss you Dick, but Dan is happy to have his friend with him now. May you Rest In Peace my friend. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.  Love you, Sheree
