Regis W. Whalen, 89

Regis W. Whalen, 89, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, March 24, 2006.  Born in Pittsburgh, PA, on June 8, 1916, Regis was the son of the late Thomas and Mary Tully Whalen.  He was the husband of the late Rose Gallagher Whalen, who died in March 2000.  They had celebrated 58 years of marriage together.  Regis enlisted in the US Navy on December 8, 1941, and served his country for four years throughout World War II.  He was stationed on the USS Intrepid during the Pacific campaign.

He retired in 1981 from Consolidated Natural Gas Corp., having worked there for 27 years.  He previously worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Highways.

His passion in life was his catholic faith and his Irish heritage.  He said the rosary daily for over 60 years, until the later years of his struggle with Alzheimers disease.  He loved to sing, especially his many favorite Irish songs and ballads.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Brother Thomas Whalen (Trappist Monk), and two sisters, Mary Riley and Jule Travers.

He is survived by two sons, Timothy T. (Sherri) of Bridgeport, WV, and Patrick D. (Christine) of Lancaster, PA.  He is also survived by six grandchildren and two sisters, Catherine Mikos of Lake Forest, Ill. and Geraldine McDonald of Pittsburgh, PA.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Pittsburgh, PA on Wednesday at 10:00am.  A viewing will be held at the William Conroy Funeral Home, Pittsburgh, PA on Tuesday evening from 6:00pm until 8:00pm.

Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Pittsburgh, PA.  In lieu of flowers contributions in Regis’s memory may be made to Lancaster Catholic High School, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, PA 17601.
