Priscilla Elaine “Penny” (Young) Barry, 76

August 23, 2015

Priscilla Elaine “Penny” (Young) Barry, 76, peacefully passed away at Calvary (hospice) Hospital in the Bronx, New York City on Sunday, August 23rd, 2015 from a weak heart and declining health.
Penny was born in Lancaster, Pa. to Thelma & Nolan Young of Lancaster, Pa. who preceded her in death. She is survived by her sister, Gloria Ann “Gay” (Young) Ingegneri, her brother-in-law, Thomas Ingegneri, Sr., two nieces, Elizabeth Ingegneri Yoder and Lisa Ingegneri Manna, twin nephews, Thomas Ingegneri, Jr and Christopher Ingegneri, and three great nephews.
Penny was a naturally gifted artist and she loved music. As a high school junior she created the Pioneer Emblem for the then newly consolidated Lampeter–Strasburg High School. As one of her classmates recently wrote to her “your creation still adorns everything L.S.H.S.” Penny played the flute and piccolo in the High School Band & State Orchestra for which she received several awards. She continued to play long into her adult life. She received a Hockey Award and was in the National Honor Society. She loved horses and dogs. She was President of the Youth Group at her church, demonstrating at an early age her leadership abilities which served her well all of her life.
Her great typing & clerical skills took her to New York City in the summer of 1957. She never returned to attend Susquehanna University because when she got to New York City she knew she had “found home”. NYC was a great place for her to flourish with her artistic eye & interests. She took modeling and acting lessons and attended NYU to study film production. She had a wonderful dog “Tasha” for eight years.
Penny worked with The National Council of Churches, NBC Radio in their music department, Turtletaub & Moss Productions (now Turtle Productions in California) and she hosted her own radio show “Healthwise” on N.P.R. for three years.
Penny married Lawrence Barry August 19th, 1967. They were married for three years and had no children. At that point in time Penny was ready “to launch my career”, starting her own business “Penny Barry Productions”. She had a wonderful, successful, rewarding career working with top US companies, famous people and well known organizations garnering many letters of acclaim from her clients. She studied French and attended the Cannes Film Festival many times. As one Playbill we found stated in their “WHO’S WHO” section; “Penny Barry (Artistic Director, Director, Producer), member of The Dramatists Guild, Creator of more than 350 stage, screen, television and radio productions in the U.S. and abroad.”
In her later years Penny took lessons in the arts of sculpting and sketching maintaining “a studio downtown” for many years. She did dog walking and pet sitting for some of her friends which helped to satisfy her love of dogs.
Completely opposite sister, we allowed for each other’s different interests while sharing the common bond of family and love for each other’s individuality.
Penny remained a resident of mid-town Manhattan, New York City until the time of her death. Her request was to be buried in Lancaster, Pa. with our mother.
All friends, relatives, former church members & neighbors are welcome to attend funeral services at Grace Lutheran Church, 517 N. Queen St., Lancaster on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at 2:30 PM with the Rev. Stephen P. Verkouw officiating. Interment following service in Woodward Hill Cemetery, Lancaster, PA.
