Condolences to the Family

I only learned of Dr. Coen’s death.  I am a former patient who has absolute faith & confidence in her knowledge, caring & judgement.  She was a great doctor & a compassionate person.  She referred me to Hershey for an insulin pump & I am grateful.  Henry Renn, Lancaster

I wanted Dr. Coen’s family to know about the huge difference she made in my life.
I am a diabetic and not a particularly good one.  Dr. C is the reason that I am living today.  I certainly would have put myself into a comma if it wasn’t for her attention and understanding.  She spent many hours- at all hours of the day and night- checking in on me and making sure that I was okay.  She understood how scary it was to be diagnosed with something that you don’t understand.
Dr. C was a fantastic doctor and an amazing friend.  I now live in Arizona and the news didn’t get here right away.  We are all a little richer for having known her.
I will miss Dr. C very much.

I just learned of Pat’s passing today and was quite saddened by the news.  I had the honor of training under Pat when I was a resident at the former Community Hospital of Lancaster.  Her compassion, her kindness and her dedication towards her patients are traits that helped mold me into the physician that I strive to be each and every day.  She was a wonderful teacher..not only of medical knowledge, but more importantly of what it takes to be a wonderful doctor.  I will always remember her … God Bless You Pat and I hope that Heaven is loaded with kitties for you to smother with your love!

To the Family of the Beloved Dr. Coen,

It is hard to put into words the positive impact this dear Doctor made in so many lives.  Upon joining a Women’s Type 1 Diabetes Support Group, I heard all the women raving about Dr. Coen and I knew I needed that kind of care. I was a Type 1 Diabetic for 25 years and three years ago received a kidney and pancreas transplantation.  This has given me opportunities for speaking engagements.  At every talk, I tell of the first appointment my husband and I had with Dr. Coen.  Her vulnerability, in sharing some of her personal struggles gave me the courage to deal with mine after fifteen years of denial.  I vividly remember sitting in her office with my husband by my side, looking and acting very much as if I didn’t want to be there, even though I was hurting deeply.  As she was asking me questions and I’m giving crisp, one-word answers, she stopped and asks, “Can I give you a hug?”  In which I abruptly reply “NO”.  She didn’t miss a beat and continued with the questions.  Suddenly she looks to my husband and asks, “Could you use a hug?”  His immediate reply was “YES!”  There in front of me your dear loved one stood with my husband giving him the hug he so desperately needed.  Wow, that simple, intuitive gesture, was the start of the healing I needed!  She had this unique gift of touching you right where you were in which literally changed my life in so many aspects.  I was the seventh person she put on the insulin pump and her urging to call using her home phone number in the middle of the night was sincere and always graciously answered.  At the “Pumpers”, support group I remember her sitting on the floor, legs crossed and just being one of the gang, encouraging us to refer to her as Pat.  When being thanked or complimented for all her hard work and dedication to us, she would tell our group that we were her heroes!

My regret are that I never wrote to my hero, telling her what I just told you.

God’s Peace and Blessings,
Nan Schock

I was always impressed with Pat’s gentle spirit, caring nature, and humility.
As her veterinarian,  I witnessed her love and compassion for her kitties who benifited greatly from her devotion.  Over the last few years I feared that their care took precedent over her own.  I knew her as my patient, and friend,  for 12 years.  During that time,  her pure gentility and kindness were apparent.  She put others before herself as Christ directed us to do.
I will miss her,  and I am sorry that I was unable to attend her memorial service.   Fondly,   Dr. Valerie Jordan

To the family of Dr. Coen,
I was a patient of Dr. Coen and she was the best. I owe her a lot and am still doing well, thanks to her help.
I just returned from vacation and was in the grocery store when I stopped a total stranger and asked him if he was diabetic. We talked for several minutes and discovered we both had been patients of Dr. Coen.
We had many kind things to say about her and how we missed her as our doctor.
When I got home and caught up with the newspapers, I was greatly sadden to read of her departure.
I will always remember her in my heart.
God Bless,
 Dr. Coen.
Sincerely,
Brad Hepfer

I was one of Dr. Coen’s patients.  She was the best doctor I have ever known.  The first doctor who actually LISTENED!  And after years of struggle, she diagnosed my Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and gave me my life back.  She was kind and caring, but also smart as a whip and up on her profession.  An appointment with Pat Coen gave you not just diagnosis and treatment, but HOPE.  And you knew you had a partner, that she was going to stick with you until you were well, no matter what.

Please accept my most sincere condolences, and know that I will be praying for you as you grieve the loss of your daughter and your sister.  I hope it is a consolation to know how much we loved and appreciated Pat.  God bless and keep you all.

I was so sad to hear of Pat’s death. She was my doctor for several years and was wonderful to me, as well as several of my friends. We always hoped that she would start to practice again because she had such a gift of kindness and patience along with her medical knowledge. I never drive by her former home on the Lititz Pike without thinking of her with affection. My sincere condolences to her family.

We were very sorry to read about Pat.  She was a wonderful person and never complained about anything.  We always enjoyed her visits when she brought her pets.   Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time.

The Staff of West Lancaster Animal Hospital.

I am so sorry for your loss. I think I was one of Dr. Coen’s first patients.  I was young, broke and had Graves Disease.  None of my family lived close to me.  Dr. Coen said my levels were "off the charts!" and that I was "the worst case" she had ever seen.  (I think she said this just to make me feel better.)
Dr. Coen saved my life. Not just because she was a wonderful physician, but because I knew she cared.  She was my doctor until she retired.  The Friday before Christmas last year, I was running into Panera’s while Pat was leaving.  We decided to forget about everything for an hour and "get caught up".  When I told her about how sad I was that my Nephew died that year, she became my doctor again and said all of the right things.  She cared. Pat and I hugged and cried over 20 years of life. She told me that I was her most unique patient (again, just to make me feel better.) I am so glad that I had the opportunity to thank her for saving my life and being such a wonderful doctor.  I sent her that day a bunch of Thin Man movies, and we kept in touch by mail.  I will miss her terribly.

Pat was one of the most generous and empathetic individuals I have ever met.  She was a caring physician and offered significant comfort to her patients.  My sincere condolences to you on the loss of a truly kind spirit.
Regards,
Amanda Campbell

I was Pat’s next door neighbor and i just wanted to send my condolences on your loss.  Pat was a pleasure to have known and will be missed by many.
