Norbert J. Greber

“Out through the fields and the woods
And over the walls I have wended:
I have climbed the hills of view
And looked at the world and descended;
I have come by the highway home.
And lo, it is ended.”
     — Robert Frost

Norbert J. Greber, 91, of Lancaster, passed away Sunday, December 4, 2011 at Lancaster General Hospital. He was born in Warstein, Germany, and came to the U.S. in 1932. He was the son of the late Joseph and Maria Spanke Greber and the devoted husband of the late Wilma Korth Greber with whom he shared 60 wonderful years of marriage.

He served in the US Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater. After the war, the “G.I. Bill of Rights” provided him with a free college education and he graduated from New York University with a Mechanical Engineering degree. He worked as a Manufacturing Engineer from 1951 to 1990, when he retired.

He was a life member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the “Over the Hill Gang,” an informal group of retired Burroughs engineers which meets for lunch once a month.

He was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church and was an accomplished photographer and carpenter. His favorite sport was soccer, and for many years he played in the German-American Soccer League in New York City.

Surviving are three children, Adele Marsteller, wife of Dr. John Marsteller of Lancaster, Dr. Randolph Greber, husband of Jane Greber of Mechanicsburg, and Terrence Greber, husband of Christine Minnich of Chalfont; six grandchildren, Daniel Marsteller, of New York City, Beth Garabedian, wife of Dr. Andre Garabedian, of Marlton, NJ, Amanda Marsteller of New York City, David Greber of New Orleans, Kelly Kast, wife of David Kast of Lakewood, CO, Dr. Todd Gould, husband of Dr. Neda Gould of Elkridge, MD; sister Anne Hildenbrand of Media; brother-in-law Henry Korth, husband of Frances Korth of Lower Gwynedd, almost four great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews; and finally, his beloved canine companion Moxie, ever at his side.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place 11 AM Friday, December 9, 2011 at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 2427 Marietta Avenue, Lancaster, PA, with The Rev. Peter I. Hahn as Celebrant. The Visitation will be 10-11 AM Friday at the church. Final Commendation and Farewell in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery with honors accorded by Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard. I think that Dad accurately defined the terms husband, father, friend, and family man. His obvious joy in engaging in family activities was contagious and heartwarming. His love and care for Mom throughout their lives together, and particularly during her illness, revealed his boundless energy and compassion. There wasn’t anything that he couldn’t build or fix, an accordion that he couldn’t play, a photo that he couldn’t capture, a wurst that he couldn’t eat, a turkey that he couldn’t carve, a soccer ball that he couldn’t kick, or a crying baby that he couldn’t soothe. The list could go on and on. We will all miss his counsel, his enthusiasm, his talents, and above all, his love.

Terry

Norbert was a wonderful Grandparent to me and I was privileged to have had him around for the first 29 years of my life.  I will always think of him as a kind, gentle, and dignified figure.  It brings me great joy that he was in good health and spirits leading up to his passing and he was still as sharp as his turkey carving knife at 91.

I want to wish our family my love and condolences in this difficult time.
Dave Greber

Hope you are enjoying your new wings grandpa!

love,
Chris

I was deeply saddened to hear about Uncle Norbert’s passing. You have my deepest sympathy. He was a wonderful man and he left behind a great legacy in his family.

For Norbert’s family

We live across the street from Norbert at 141 Treetops. We will really miss seeing Norbert and Moxie. He was always so friendly and we enjoyed chatting with him over the years. He was happy to show us his pond with the goldfish too.

We know you will miss him and we send our sympathy. It was great that he always had such a sharp mind and was in good physical shape for 91 years. We will certainly miss seeing him walking by with his sweet little dog.

God bless all of you.
Sincerely,
Doris and Don Smith

Dear Terry, Chris and Dave,

Katie told me of this passing and I’ve been meaning to send a card.  Thank you for sharing this obit–I enjoyed learning more about him.  From all the three of you have shared about him, he sounds like a wonderful father and grandfather.

Not everyone is blessed with such a caring and engaged paternal energy in their lives.  I know he will be missed, and I know that you were all blessed to have him healthy and in your lives for so long.

Mark and I are holding you in love and sympathy this holiday season.

Mary and Mark
