Nicolas Verastegui, 91

May 15, 2014

Born in Villa de Guadalupe in San Luis, Potosi, Mexico, Nicolas was the son of the late Alfonso and Andrea (Mendoza) Verastegui. Nicolas moved at age 13 to further his education alone. He attended el Colegio Militar in Mexico City, where as a cadet, he met the love of his life journey, Beatriz. Their love created their first-born child, Marti. Nick ascended to the level of Captain in the Mexican Army and had his second-born son, Sergio. This is when he decided to come to the United States looking for a better life for his family. He came first to prepare a home for his family in Chicago then sent for his wife, daughter and young son. After more than a year-long separation, their reunion resulted in the birth of their last-born daughter, Leticia. Nick sacrificed to provide his children the opportunity to further their education. With that gift, he gave his children a life-long love of knowledge. Nick lived in Chicago in the company of other family members that had also made the journey to Chicago and knew the joy of caring for his wife, his children and his first-born grandson, Ricky. A Chicago resident for over 35 years, Nick moved to Lancaster in 1995 to enjoy his retirement and his grandchildren, Geoff and Andy. The most recent love in his life is his great-granddaughter, Lila. Nick is also survived by two sisters: Vicenta and Carmen. He was preceded in death by a brother, Severo.

Nick loved to converse about his life journey and tell stories or jokes that made us laugh about the absurdities of life. He enjoyed collecting coins, researching and investing in various markets and loved to garden and doodle. He also enjoyed playing with his keyboard piano. Nick enjoyed his wife’s good cooking, and being served as a king. He loved the challenge of playing dominoes & Sequence. Nick liked to go swimming, dancing and writing short poems.

Nick’s family would like to thank the staff of Hospice & Community Care and of Home Instead for their care and support.

Dear Mrs. Verastegui, Marti, Allan, and Family,

Having read and absorbed so much more of Nicolas’ life story today, we were all blessed to walk beside such a great man of deep character who lived for (and devotedly with) his family.  Many people today talk about “family” and he, your patriarch, lived an exemplary presence in this world. His example in both marriage and parenting should inspire us all to strengthen our commitments and to live soundly with our God-given families. Our prayers are with you.  This is such a significant loss.  I know that you, Marti and Allan, pour your lives out sacrificially following in his footsteps.  Praying for you as you grieve and for some peace and needed rest in the days to come.  Praying for Mrs. Verastegui as she begins this new journey without him…

Blessings,

Jay Rairigh
