Michael L. Valldes, 84

December 10, 2017

Michael L. Valldes, 84, of Lancaster, PA, passed away peacefully at Landis Homes, December 10th, 2017. Born in Lancaster, PA, he was the son of Greek immigrants, the late Lewis and Irene (Macrides) Valldes. He was married to the love of his life, Koula (Andreades), for 59 blissful years. They were inseparable and loved traveling, music, dancing and spending time with their children and grandchildren.
Mike was a graduate of J.P. McCaskey High School. He graduated from Millersville State College, with a B.S. in Biology, in three years while raising a family and working full-time. He started his teaching career at Marticville Elementary School, Penn Manor School District, where he was also an Interim Principal, later teaching at Smoketown Elementary, Conestoga Valley School District, where he taught for the majority of his career from which he retired. The fact that Mike continued to be contacted by students for many years after his retirement is a testament to the positive impact he had on his students’ lives.
Mike served honorably in the US Air Force as an Airman First Class during the Korean War from 1952 – 1956, and was stationed at Laughlin AFB, Del Rio, TX.
He had many interests and hobbies; he loved tennis, golf and playing billiards. He was a very talented artist who enjoyed oil painting and jewelry making and was known for his hand sculpted Santas and Byzantine gold crosses. Mike was a lifelong member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church and Order of Ahepa, Lancaster Red Rose Chapter #71.
Surviving are two daughters and a son: Maria A Winalski, wife of Joseph S.; Renee Denlinger, wife of Rick; and Stas M Valldes, partner of Maureen McElrone all of Lancaster, PA, seven Grandchildren: Matthew J. Winalski (Katie), Krista K. Winalski, Michael L. Winalski, Luke M. Valldes, Kayla J. Rudy (Zane), Alec L. and Nick L. Denlinger, one Great-Grandchild, Charlie E. Rudy and one sister Rosie Pappas, wife of Anthony of West Chester, PA.
The family would like to extend their gratitude for the loving care that Mike received from the exceptional health care staff at Landis Homes.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral services on Thursday, December 14th, 2017 at 10:30am at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 64 Hershey Avenue, Lancaster, PA 17603, Rev. Hector Firoglanis officiating. The viewing will be at the Church from 9:30am – 10:30am prior to the service. Burial services will be held at Conestoga Memorial Park.

To the family:.  Please accept my most deepest sympathy.  Mr. Valldes was my 4th grade elementary teacher at Marticville Elementary School.  He was such a great teacher and even though I am now in my 60’s, I still have the fond memories of the caring and compassionate teacher he was to our class.  I believe he was my best teacher throughout my grade school years.  I will be praying for you and your family. God Bless! Rose (Skaggs) Mendez

Praying for your family as you journey through this difficult time.  I remember wishing your dad  was my teacher in fourth grade because he was everyones favorite, and students felt loved/special in his classroom.  Fortunately later I  became friends with Renee and had the chance to get to know him better through bday parties/events  etc…  I think I will always remember how well he cared for his wife, they were so cute together and fun to be around.  I’m so glad to have known him and your entire family… kids, grandkids… a beautiful reflection of your parents/grandparents  love.  We  am praying for each of you…Maria, Stas and Renee and families. Hugs and love. The Leiby’s

So sorry to hear of the loss of Uncle Mike –  Renee, Stas and Maria
Thank you, Maria for calling my mom (Margie Pittas) – my dad, George, cried when he heard the news. He loved him very much. He felt very close to Uncle Mike as they had known each other since early childhood. I remember Uncle Mike at the family reunions in Lancaster (we were teenagers) with all the cousins and the Theas and Theos….we will miss him! We love you – you are all in our thoughts and prayers. May his memory be eternal. With love in Christ,  Denise Lansdell (and sisters Diana and Michelle)

Mr. Valldes was my 5th grade teacher at Smoketown Elementary School. He was my favorite teacher. I remember his kind heart and funny sense of humor. I kept in contact with Mr. Valldes every year, at Christmas time, when we exchanged Christmas cards and gave each other updates on our lives. My heart is saddened by the news of his passing. I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. He will truly be missed.

Mr Valldes was my teacher at Smoketown Elementary many years ago. I was fortunate to be one of his students. I fondly remember him as a gentle and caring person. He was one of many memorable educators that supported me as a child of an immigrant who became the first in my family to get a bachelor’s then a master’s degree in education. He made a connection with each student on a personal level and I rank him as one of my all time favorite teachers. God Speed Mr. V!  Carla Cook Saylor
