Michael J. Batutis

November 01, 2014

With profound sadness Judy L. Batutis announces the death of her beloved husband of 30 years, Michael J. Batutis, at home on Saturday, November 1, 2014 after an extended illness.
Born in Lancaster, PA, Michael attended Lancaster Catholic High School, earned a BA from Franklin & Marshall College and a Master’s degree in Sociology from Duke University in N.C. He also served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era, stationed at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.
Michael retired from the US Census Bureau in 2009 as Branch Chief of Population Estimates Division where he was responsible for overseeing national population estimates. His responsibilities also included overseeing the evaluation and accuracy of the census counts before publication. Before that he was employed by New York State as Chief Demographer in the Department of Economic Development. Michael authored and co-authored several publications and articles on population estimates and state data information.
Michael loved all things trains! He was an avid train modeler as well as a frequent passenger. He was a student of military history, loved fine dining and fine wine and traveling. Michael was a passionate fan of college basketball (Go Duke!) and commiserated each season along with his much loved Washington Redskins. Michael will be deeply missed by all who knew him well.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Devin M. Batutis of San Jose, CA, a grandson, Dean also of CA, and a brother Patrick J. Batutis (Sandra) of Mount Joy, PA.
A Gathering of family and friends will take place at Charles F. Snyder, Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA from 2-4PM on Thursday, November 6, 2014 with the Service at 4PM where friends are invited to share memories of Michael. Burial will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA on Friday at 2:30PM. Condolences to the Family

To the Family of Mike and Judy Batutis,
My thoughts and prayers are with you.  I am so saddened by the loss of such a fine man.  Mike meant so much to me as a friend and professional mentor.  I have so many happy memories of him that mean so much.  He was a loving and caring person, had a great mind, and always knew where he was going.
I wish for you comfort and peace.

To Mike’s Family
In working with Mike over the years at Census, I came to value his insight and knowledge of the Census and the population estimates process. I know that his work in the estimates area was a major contributor in raising awareness and respect for the estimates area both within the Bureau and within the Demographic Area in general.  My thoughts to his family at this time.

To Mikes family,
Growing up I heard many great stories about my cousin Mike.  How he was an inspiration to me, driven to achieve and a good family man. Unfortunately due to the divorce of my mother and father I never got to know Mike and that side of my family. I wish we would have.  I am so sorry for your loss.  My family’s prayers are with you.
Sincerely
Timothy J Droney, MD

To Judy and MIke’s Family –
I am sorry for your loss. I always appreciated Mike’s direct and honest approach in working with him. I also appreciated his advise from time to time on work related matters and his insight on the Census. When he laughed, he had that big smile in the photo that was a pleasure to see. With sympathy and prayers,
Jeff Hardcastle
