Melvin H. Nuechterlein, 82

Melvin H. Nuechterlein, 82 of Lancaster, died on Tuesday March 13, 2007 at Lancaster General Hospital.  He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elsie L. Nuechterlein of Lancaster, three sons: David J. Nuechterlein of Shaker Heights, OH, Robert P. Nuechterlein of Exton, PA, James R. Nuechterlein of Flemington, NJ and a daughter, Jean A. Larson of Trumbull, CT and eight grandchildren: Lauren E. Nuechterlein, Anne L. Nuechterlein, Ryan T. Nuechterlein, Matthew R. Nuechterlein, Christopher J. Nuechterlein, Kelly J. Nuechterlein, Christine E. Larson, and Katherine A. Larson.  A brother, Harold F. Nuechterlein of St. Paul, MN, also survives him.

He was born April 22, 1924 in Frankenmuth, MI to Herbert F. Nuechterlein and Alma E. Nuechterlein.  He was predeceased by both of his parents and his sister Ellen M. Nuechterlein.  He was confirmed in 1938 as a member of St. Lorenz Lutheran Church, Frankenmuth, MI.  He graduated from Arthur Hill High School in Saginaw, MI and received a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University.   He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during WWII and was a member of the Air Force reserves. 

Mel was employed as an Electrical Engineer for 38 years by the Public Service Electric and Gas Company of Newark, NJ from which he retired in 1988.  During this period, he was a resident of Millburn, NJ and Basking Ridge, NJ.

Mel and his wife Elsie traveled extensively throughout the world.  He was actively interested in electronics, photography and vintage automobiles.  He was active as a leader for many years with Boy Scouts of America in NJ and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award.  He was a member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) and Mount Calvary Lutheran Church.  Mel’s warmth, smile, and wisdom will be greatly missed by all who know him.

In accordance with Mel’s wishes, a cremation and private internment took place at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Lititz, PA on March 16, 2007.  A memorial service for friends and family will be conducted by Reverend Jeffrey Webb at Mount Calvary on March 26, 2007 at 11:00 a.m.  Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 308 Petersburg Road, Lititz, PA 17543 or the Homestead Village Endowment Fund, P.O.
