Mary E. Ford, 87

Mary Eleanor Ford, 87, passed away on September 8, 2006 at the Lancaster General Hospital.

Born in Harrisburg, she was the daughter of the late David L. Ford and Lillie May Wiggins Ford. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, John D. and Harry W. Ford, and sisters, Helen Ford Roth and Margaret Ford Horting.

Mary is survived by nephews, John D. Ford II of Cartersville, Ga, and Terry L. Ford of Mechanicsburg, nieces, Marilee Jane Ford Snow of Harrisburg, Marlene Ford Martin of Winchester, VA, and Elizabeth Betsy Ford Langley of Harrisburg.

Mary graduated from Harrisburg Hospital Training School for Nurses in 1940. She served during WWII as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Nursing Corps. Stationed at Mitchell Field on Long Island, NY, where she was a surgical nurse treating the wounded soldiers returning from Europe.

Following the war, she continued her nursing career, while returning to school where she earned her masters degree in sociology. She rose to the position of Director of Nursing at North Shore Hospital in Manhasset, Long Island, NY.

Mary and her friend Ellen Foberg eventually left nursing to move to New England, where they started an antique business. They later moved to Lancaster and continued their business for many years.

Mary’s funeral service will be held at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery on Tuesday September 12th at 1:30p.m. Friends will be received at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home and Chapel Inc., 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, Pa on Tuesday from 11:30-12:30. Please omit flowers.
