Mary C. “Missy” Fitz, 56

June 26, 2017

Mary C. Fitz, 56, of Lititz, died Monday, June 26 at home after a two-year battle with tongue cancer.
Missy was the daughter of the late Peter V. Carr and Rosemary Keogh Carr, and wife of 33 years to Robert E. Fitz, Jr.
A 1979 graduate of Bishop Ludden High School in Syracuse, NY, Missy earned her BSN from the Niagara University School of Nursing, Niagara Falls, NY, in 1983. Following graduation, Missy was employed as a Registered Nurse (RN) at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, NY. Following her husband’s job transfer to Lancaster County, Missy gained employment at Lancaster General Hospital as an RN, completing her nursing career at Womens and Babies Hospital. Missy preferred being a full-time mother to her sons, returning to part-time work as a Paraeducator working with special needs children at Lititz Elementary in the Warwick School District when her boys got older.
Missy genuinely loved being around people and was always ready to volunteer, which led to stints with the Lititz Elementary PTO (vice president and president), Lititz Elementary Book Fair (Chair), Cub Scout Pack 142 (Den Leader), and Boy Scout Troop 142 (Committee Secretary).
All Missy truly wanted out of life was to be a mother, and to that end, she would do anything for her sons Michael and Timothy. She was strict with the boys with a special loving touch which led both to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. Communication, humor, respect and manners were a hallmark of Missy’s household.
Missy loved spending time with family and friends, camping in the family’s pop-up trailer, following NASCAR (she was a big fan of Dale Earnhardt, Jr.), gardening, yellow and lavender flowers, cooking and baking, vacationing with her entire family at Skaneateles Lake, Cape May, anything Penn State-related, Syracuse basketball, watching the TV shows CSI, Little House on the Prairie and anything on the Hallmark channel (the last two items guaranteed that she would have the TV to herself).
In addition to her husband and mother, Missy is survived by her sons Michael R. of Seattle, WA and Timothy C. at home; sisters Margaret C. (David) Everett of Old Chatham, NY and Catherine C. (Kevin) Mahoney of Onondaga Hill, NY; brothers Peter V. (Theresa) Carr Jr. of Burnt Hills, NY and Timothy K. (Lisa) Carr of Manhasset, NY; brother-in-law Richard F. (Janet) Fitz of New Holland, PA; 10 nieces, 7 nephews, 2 aunts, 2 uncles and many extended family members.
A viewing will be held from 7PM-9PM, Friday, June 30, 2017, at the Charles F. Snyder, Jr., Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543. A short prayer service will be conducted at 8:45P.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30AM, Saturday, July 1, 2017 at St. James Catholic Church where Missy was a member, 505 Woodcrest Ave., Lititz, PA, with Rev. James O’Blaney C.Ss.R., as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Witness Park Cemetery, Lititz.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Missy’s memory to the following Hospice & Community Care, 685 Good Drive, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125 (https://www.hospiceconnect.org/memorial) or Johns Hopkins Department of Otolaryngology (https://secure.jhu.edu/form/fjhm – From the drop-down, select “Department of Otolaryngology”) or Boy Scout Troop 142, c/o St James Catholic Church, 505 Woodcrest Ave., Lititz, PA 17543.

June 30, 2017

Our deepest condolences to Missy’s entire family.  Words cannot adequately explain how “Mrs. Fitz” affected our family.  Missy was our son Noah’s full time aide for the majority of his elementary school education.  They formed a bond that transcended the school setting as our son asked about her all of the time even when he wasn’t in school and still asks about her every day to this very day.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family.

Dear Bob,
What a beautiful tribute to Missy. You captured the essence of the gal I’ve known all of her life and most of mine. The words brought smiles and tears. I have marveled all through her long battle at the strength and perseverance with every surgery and loss and trail that she suffered through. I hope it brings some comfort to know that you did everything known  to current science to battle this demon. i know you, your children, Rosemary and her children gave Missy attentive devotion and support. No one more deserves the honor and glory she is enjoying now.
God Bless,
Sylvia and Bill Fenn
