Maria Papademetriou, 98
April 16, 2023
Maria Papademetriou, 98, died peacefully at home with her children around her on April 16, Orthodox Easter Sunday. She was born the daughter of Stamatios Monahas and Stamatia Alahioti Monahas in Asfendiou, Kos, Greece. Maria was married to the late Theodore Papademetriou.
She worked with her late husband at their Fulton Restaurant for many years and later retired from the housekeeping staff at LGH. She was known for making an excellent Greek pastry, finikia, as well as her stuffed grape leaves. She loved her Annunciation Greek Church and always helped prepare for their famous food bazaar. She was an active member of Philoptohos, a women’s charity organization of the church, and a member of the Pan-Coan Society. Maria walked for CROP for many years well into her 80’s and was acknowledged for her charitable contributions by the Lancaster County Council of Churches. She had a great sense of humor and would often recite funny old Greek poems. In her later years, she faced some health issues but usually recovered with the help of a visit from her priest, viewing Wheel of Fortune, and eating a steak sandwich! Her annual request would be that she could put her feet in the ocean. Most of all, she was a loving, kind, and unselfish wife, mother, and grandmother.
She said she was blessed with a good husband, children, and her family of many wonderful nephews, nieces, and cousins in the U.S., Greece, Australia, and Canada. Her church “family” showered her with love and prayers. Her longevity was due to her fantastic family doctor, Dr. Nikitas Zervanos, who looked after her with such great care. Thanks also to Dr. Oftedal at the Womens and Babies Practice and Hospice for her recent care.
Maria is survived by her three children; Stella Papademetriou of Lancaster, Nancy St. Clair (Patrick) of Dale City, VA, and Thomas of Huntington Beach, CA (partner Brendon Perkins). She had two stepchildren; Barbara and Gus Papademetriou, of Lancaster. Maria had five grandchildren; Patrick St. Clair (Liza), Tad St. Clair (Shannon), Tim St. Clair (Viviana), Christopher (Tricia) and Sharon Papademetriou, and she had eight great-grandchildren. She was preceeded in death by her sister, Katina Maounis Gervosilis, her brother, Mihali Monahas, and step-daughter Mary Papademetriou. Surviving her are her brother, Vaso Monahas, and sisters, Toula Kallinikos and Evankella Koulianos, all of Australia; a sister Christina Keares of Greece; and a sister Kaliopi Gerovasilis of Lancaster.
She is now free of pain and in God’s hands. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Philoptohos Society, the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church both at 64 Hershey Avenue, Lancaster, PA 17603, or Hospice, 685 Good Dr., Lancaster, PA 17603.
The family will greet guests on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, from 5 PM to 7 PM at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 64 Hershey Ave. Lancaster, PA 17603. A Funeral service will be held at the church on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at 10:30 AM. A viewing will also be held on Thursday from 9:30 AM until the time of service. Interment to follow at Conestoga Memorial Park.

Dear Stella, Nancy, Tom and family,
On behalf of my dad, I send you love and peace as you come to grips with not having your mom with you to hug and caress. Our moms filled our lives and the lives of others with such wisdom, compassion, and self-less love. I remember your mom’s sweet face and her kind soul. I will always remember her sparkling eyes and her smile. My heart goes out you all of you and will be praying for you as you go through the next days, weeks, and months. We have been blessed with parents who have given us much to be able to go on with our lives with purpose and meaning.
Hugging you all from here….your friend over time,
Cindy Gianopoulos Oak

I was privileged to be Maria Papademetriou’s personal physician for fifty years. Out of mutual interest, we always enjoyed reviewing our family’s connections, and that helped cement the bond we felt for each other. She leaves a wonderful legacy as a loving wife to her deceased husband, Ted, and her unconditional love and devotion to her children. They in turn adored their mother, and I want to especially acknowledge the extraordinary care and love that Stella administered to her mother, especialluy during the last seven or more years when Stella helped her mother endure a painful and disabling back disorder. I will alwayus remember Maria with great fondness… May her memory be eternal, With love, Nikita

Stella, we were so sorry to hear of your sweet mama’s passing. Although we didn’t know her well, she was always a joy to be around. I have a picture of her and me at Chris and Tricia’s wedding which I treasure. May it comfort you to know how much she was loved.

Thea Maritsa was a gem and will be greatly missed, from the time we landed in Lancaster from Kos in 1968 and having lived near the Fulton restaurant we were lucky to have enjoyed her loving kindness and generosity and her (yaprakia) stuffed grape leaves not to long ago visiting Lancaster she had prepared a whole pot of them for us to enjoy. Coming from Asfendiou Kos me and my wife are both related to her me on her husband side Theo Thodora and my wife on her side, 98 years is a good run she also has a cousin in Toronto that’s a hundred years old Thea Vagela, we are very sad to see her depart us but we will celebrate her in internal memory, to Stela and family our deepest sympathy and prayers!

I don’t recall a memory of my childhood on New Street without Thea Maritsa. Her smile was contagious and her love for me and my family was tremendous. I will never forget her fresh mizithra, rice pudding and finikia everytime we spent time at her house; her hugs and kisses that let you know how much she loved you; her neverending energy; and especially her hilarious sense of humor. Her home was always filled with people, food, and laughter around the dining room table while all of the kids hung out in the kitchen, family room or on the porch. She was loved by all who knew her. Her children and grandchildren carry on her goodheartedness, loving smiles and kindness. She and her husband created a beautiful family here. She will be missed very much. May her memory be eternal! xoxoxo

Stella, Nancy & Tommy: Deepest Sympathies in your Mom’s passing. So many memories of my childhood revolve around 306 E. New St. and all the things we learned about the Greek way of life. Fred and I will never forget the cookies your Mom baked for our Wedding almost 50 yrs ago. We certainly developed a love for Grape Leaves because of your Mom’s generosity of sharing what she cooked. I will never forget seeing my Mom & Dad go across the alley on New St on Christmas Eve to visit with your parents and share an Ozo. Also, your Mom worried along with my Mom as I laid in Labor at Mom’s waiting to go to the hospital to have my 1st child. So glad we had such great neighbors growing up. God Bless you and your entire family as you grieve and I pray Gods peace on you all. Fondly Fred & Roxanne Fidler

To the Papademetriou Family,
I will always have a special place in my heart for your mom. I grew up on New St seeing her almost every day. Many great memories of Thea Maritsa. I never saw her upset, ever. She always had that beautiful smile on her face. That speaks volumes of the kind of person she was. A true saint! You were all blessed to have her for so long. May her memory be eternal.
