Lorraine Sensenig, 87

Oct. 12, 1927 - June 28, 2015

“When you remember me, do it with a kind deed or word to someone who needs you. If you do as I ask, I will live forever.”

Lorraine Sensenig, 87, died June 28, 2015 in the care of The Mennonite Home and Lancaster Hospice. Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Jesse K. and Sue (Snader) Mellinger. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Paul B. Sensenig. Lorraine is survived by her daughter Allegra and her son-in-law Chris; her beloved sisters and brothers: Miriam, Elaine, Barbara, Merv and Jesse Jr., their spouses, and children.

Lorraine graduated with academic distinction from East Lampeter High School, Goshen College, and Temple University. She was a teacher of English and French in the classroom and of the great classicists at the piano. A lover of nature, literature, music, and a patron of the arts, she was a lifelong companion to her husband Paul in pursuit of these passions. She rests now where she has always been happiest….at Paul’s side again…sharing their love of music and listening to the most joyous chorus imaginable.

Memorial contributions in Lorraine’s name may be made to: Friends of Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, Inc.,

Condolences to the Family

To Allegra and Chris and Lorraine’s brothers and sisters:
Whenever I think of my “big sister'” Lorraine,  I see her walking outdoors, enjoying nature in the places she loved.  We shared a number of those walks over the years in and around Lancaster and in Massachussetts where I lived for a time.  I am reminded of the words of Tom Campbell who eulogized Lorraine at her memorial service last October.  He spoke movingly of her beautiful spirit and said… “She had such a gentle and loving soul, as a mother, wife, sister, teacher and friend”.
One of the most memorable and impressive things to me about Lorraine’s life was her lifetime committment to social justice for all, never hesitating to speak out on the issues she believed in and cared about.
The sorrow I will always feel for the loss of my sister is eased by the memory of  the wonderful times we shared together for many years.  Lorraine, you are and always will be a most beloved sister and hold a special place in my heart.
Your loving sister,
Lainie Mellinger

“Do not stand at my grave and weep; I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow, I am the sun on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush, I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.  I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.  I am not there; I did not die.”                Mary Elizabeth Frye  1932

We love you Mom,   Allegra and Chris
