Lorraine M. Beck, 57

July 25, 2013

Lorraine M. Beck of Landisville, passed into eternal life on Thursday, July 25, 2013, at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia after a valiant 3 year battle with leukemia. Born in Lancaster on September 28, 1955, Lorraine was the devoted daughter of the late Phyllis M. Stopper. She was also the granddaughter of the late Dominic and Annunciata (Gadino) Cuzzuculi, as well as the cherished daughter-in-law of the late Goddard and Dorothy Beck. She was the loving wife of Thomas A. Beck for 25 years.
Lorraine was a proud graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School Class of 1973. She received her R.N. from Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing and her Bachelor of Science Degree in nursing from the University of Phoenix. She spent her professional life as a skilled and compassionate nurse, completely devoted to giving her patients outstanding care. She worked for over 30 years at Lancaster General Hospital, primarily as nurse manager in the renal dialysis unit, receiving Manager of the Year honors for many years. She also worked as an infusion nurse at Ephrata Cancer Clinic.
Lorraine was gifted with a beautiful voice and greatly enjoyed performing in musical theatre at the Fulton Opera House, Mount Gretna Playhouse, and Ephrata Theater. She also sang professionally with various groups, most notably the Don Trostle Quartet, appearing in numerous functions and at a variety of venues, including the White House and for the Philadelphia Phillies. She had a wide variety of interests and hobbies that she pursued enthusiastically.
Lorraine was a lifelong and deeply committed Catholic woman of faith and a member of St. Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church. She had the rare pleasure of hosting the late Bishop Joseph McFadden for her famous lasagna at her home last December.
Lorraine was a very warm, gracious, and generous person who made the most of the every moment. She had a sincere and caring heart and was a tremendous asset in all areas of her life. She had a sparkle in her eyes, a great smile, and an infectious laugh. She was a true friend to all who knew her. She was a very positive person with a giving spirit, always ready to reach out to people and lend a helping hand. She will always be cherished by those who knew her. She was a complete joy, a real treasure. She had a uniquely fulfilling and honorable life.
Lorraine is survived by her husband Tom and her loving son, John William and his fiancé Rachel Shoemaker, as well as her sister, Diane L. Ross and her two children Alex L. Ross and Anne M. Ross. She is also survived by her Beck-in-laws: Goddard Jr. and Willanne Beck, Suzanne and Keith Hoke, Kathleen Beck, Francine and Tom Moyer, Stephen Beck, and Michael and Connie Beck, as well as her Beck nieces and nephews: Nathan and Evan Beck, Megan, Kevin, and Hannah Cuff, Dr. Molly Hoke, Jonathan and Allison McMillan, Jillian and Kyle Almoney, and Patrick, Sarah, and Kendall Beck.

Dear Beck Family,
I knew Lorraine through the theater community.  In a production of ANYTHING GOES, she and I were angels.  She truly is and was an angel.  ANYTHING GOES was my favorite show that we did together, I think because my fondest memory of her was her telling us that she was pregnant right before that show one evening.  Her quick smile, beautiful voice, deep resonant laugh and compassionate heart made her so very special. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

Dear Tom and Family,
We met at the Ephrata Cancer Center picnic this past May. My husband and I are patients there since 2008. Lorraine worked with us and always brought us laughs. She talked about her family all the time and how much she loved all of you! She was a GREAT nurse. We had a close connection right from the beginning and talked about how wonderful and fullfilling her life was. I want to thank you for sharing her with all of us, she meant the world to everyone she knew and my heart is just broken in pieces. I will miss her so much, but it comforts me to know she is siging in heaven and is Gods Angel now. She will always be with you and John.
With all our love and prayers,
Trisha & Eric Shaffer

To the family and loved ones of Lorraine;
Lorraine and I sang together, and performed at the Fulton in Actor’s Company Productions.  Though I haven’t had the priviledge of working with her for many years, she was a great supporter of the Arts, particularly theater, and from the stage I would continue to spot Lorraine (and Liz!) at every performance I have been involved in (usually in the front row!)!  Always smiling, her laugh could be heard, and her joyful attitude and twinkling eyes were the reflection of her warm and compassionate heart.  She’s an example of a generous and kind life and will be missed, but remembered fondly.  Sing with the Angels Lorraine – you will probably be in the choir!  -Kathy Long

Dear Mr. Beck and Family, When my Husband, Nathan received his diagnosis of cancer in December, Lorraine was the RN who cared for him during his first infusion.  She opened her heart and shared her own history which gave my Husband the hope and support that only a nurse could share. My Husband passed away in January, 2013 but he often spoke of Lorraine’s courage, strength and compassionate care.  Only time will ease the pain and your tears. Remeber you shed those tears because you had the chance to love someone very special.
With deepest sympathy,
Peg Newcomer

I had the privilage of meeting and working with Lorraine in the early 80’s at LGH. She was a beautiful person inside and out with a smile that would light up the room! We had the honor of her voice like an angel singing at our wedding. The memories of her “Ave Maria” will stay with us always. She was a treasure and we have her family in our thoughts and prayers. May your own wonderful memories give you strength in the days ahead. Heaven has acquired an angel with a halo of gold.
May God bless you and God bless Lorraine!

Lorraine and I were in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat together many years ago.  She helped me to stay on pitch, which was not an easy job, and I helped her with her dancing.  Her sparkling eyes, ready smile and positive encouragement were always an inspiration.  Whenever I saw Lorraine over the years it was always like a breath of fresh air.  Warmth just radiated from her.  I wish to extend my sincerest sympathy to you, her family, because I can only imagine the hole that her passing will leave in your lives.
Most Sincerely, Holly Kleimo

I only knew Lorraine for a short while – she was one of the nurses that helped care for my husbad Dale, before he passed away in March 2012.  At that time, Lorraine was always an upbeat personality and compassionate care giver.  Dale and I were very fond of her.  I offer you my deepest sorrow for your loss of such a vibrant, caring and wonderful  individual.  May she rest in peace –   Joan Fegely

Tom and John, I was very saddened to hear of Lorraine’s passing.  My thoughts and prayers are with you.  Lorraine lived her life with such passion, as a wife and mother, a nurse, a singer, an actress, a cook…whatever she did, she did it well.  I count it a privilege to have been her coworker in dialysis.  I will cherish many memories of Lorraine, her laughter, her wonderful stories and her compassion in caring for others.   Kim Evans-Whitney
