Linda J. Masengarb, 69

Linda J. (Donaldson) Masengarb, 69, of Lancaster, passed away unexpectedly in her home on Wednesday, December 19.  She was born November 10, 1943 in Whitefish Bay, WI to the late William and Jane (Schofer) Donaldson.

She attended high school in Moline, IL and graduated in 1961.  She then attended Katherine Gibbs Business School in Boston, MA and went on to work for the American Broadcasting Company in New York and RR Donnelley & Sons Company in Chicago.  She married her husband, Paul W. Masengarb in 1966 and resided in Evanston, IL and Glasgow, KY before moving to Lancaster in 1972.  She returned to school and graduated cum laude from Millersville University in 1981.

Linda was a resident of Lancaster for 18 years and was involved in many volunteer work projects and served for a period as head of the superintendent’s lay advisory council for the Manheim Township School District.  She was always active in community activities and volunteer work but there was no higher priority in her life than her family.  She centered her life around her children and their interests and activities.

In 1990, another move brought her and her husband back to Chicago when he transferred to the RR Donnelley corporate offices.  Although her husband retired in 2001, she continued her 30 year professional career and joined Zurich Insurance as a consultant in the field of workers compensation and employee return-to-work programs.  Linda was considered an authority in this field and was published numerous times on these subjects.  During this period she resided at Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia.

While in Virginia, she served as a docent at Poplar Forest, the restored home of Thomas Jefferson.  In addition, she served as a volunteer worker for the American Cancer Society.  Just two months ago, she and her husband moved from Smith Mountain Lake back to Lancaster, where she was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Michael W. Masengarb, husband of Kristen; her daughter, Ann M. Rieker, wife of Matt, all of Lancaster; four grandchildren:  Ben and Michael Rieker and Maddie and Isabelle Masengarb.  Her sister, Julie Jenkins, lives in Wilmington, NC.

Linda will be remembered by her family and friends as a wonderful and loving mother, friend, and partner.  We miss you and will always love you.

It was Linda’s wish that no services be held; however, a memorial gathering will be held at a later date.

Please omit flowers.  Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to American Cancer Society, 314 Good Dr., Lancaster, PA  17603. To place a condolence online, please visit SnyderFuneralHome.com. Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory 717-872-5041

Linda was one of my childhood friends from 25th Ave. Ct.  Along with Lynn Price, the three of us spent many hours playing in each other’s homes as well as out in the neighborhood.  I have many fond memories of our times together.  I was shocked and saddened to hear of her unexpected passing.  Hold tight to the good memories you have shared with Linda.  Condolences to Bill, her two precious children, and to the grandchildren who will all miss her desperately.  My condolences also go to Julie, who like me, is now without her sibling.  I am so thankful that I was able to talk to Linda at our 50th MHS Reunion.

One of the truly special people has left behind true sorrow, grief and shock for the family and friends with this untimely passing. We are only saddened that we had so little time to be with her in the many years we have known her.

Bill,

We are deeply saddened to learn of Linda’s passing. Many years, and several relocations for both of us, have passed since we had the pleasure of first meeting you and Linda during the 1972 startup of “Lancaster West”. One occasion, if memory serves correctly, was a Kentucky Derby party you and Linda graciously hosted for many of us, then recently relocated to Lancaster from several other states.

Bill, our thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time. We trust you will find comfort in the days ahead as you share the many warm and happy memories that are Linda’s legacy to you and all who were privileged to have known her.

Best wishes,
Ron & Sylvia Vickrey

I am so sorry. I can’t believe that my darling neighbor girl has left us. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
