Condolences to the Family

May 29, 2016

I am so sorry on this anniversary date of Kathleen’s terrible demise. Saying prayers for her glorious repose. My bitterness towards the druggie driver has not changed. Peace to all the family.

My heart and prayers are with each one of you.  Kathleen was a student with extraordinary gifts of mind and heart.  I knew her through many of the activities she was part of, especially the Catholic Daughters.
May her peace companion each one of you.
Sister Helen Scarry, RJM
Roman Catholic Chaplain

Dearest Peggy,
There are no words to express the sadness I feel for you and everyone at this dreadful time. Please know that I love you and am here when you are ready. My love to everyone. She was our radiant girl and a joy to all who knew her. You and she are forever in my heart. Sonja.

Dear Peggy, Tom, Tommy, Christopher, Patrick, Michael and Kevin,

It is with the greatest sadness and sympathy that our family mourns your heartbreaking loss.  Please know that I have a special place in my heart for your beloved Kathleen, for she was a true inspiration to me personally and to those of us with children in the SLD program at ASL.  As a parent, I appreciated how empowering it felt to know someone who not only was smart, but who knew how to speak up for herself, how to ask for help when she needed it and get it.  She was a wonderful role model.  Seeing her succeed in so many ways at ASL and Georgetown was a marvelous affirmation of all that our children are capable of achieving, regardless of one’s learning challenges.  Though I never said it, Kathleen was my hero and forever will be.

In a life cut short too soon, we pray you may find comfort and strength in knowing that Kathleen leaves behind a legacy that will live on.  For hers is the gift of hope, a timeless legacy that speaks to our dreams and aspirations and all that can be achieved through perseverance, personal advocacy, positive attitude and abiding faith.

Our hearts and prayers are with you, your family and all who loved Kathleen.

Ann, Mark, Jack and Elizabeth Lowey

Tommy and the Benz family.

Peggy,
I’m a friend from your past; I was Linda Musser back then and we were at Lancaster Catholic High School together until you switched to the Academy.
I am so sorry for your loss! Your daughter surely is in the arms of Jesus- according to the obit she was a devoted Catholic Christian who lived out her Faith. Although she had joined the angels, I know that does not take away the profound ache in your heart. I will pray for you and your famile. God bless you, Peggy.
Linda Musser Greineder

Dear Michael and Benz Family,
I am so, so sorry for your immense loss. Kathleen was, and continues to be, an inspiration to all for the way she lived her faith, the way she loved others – who she was. I enjoyed every moment that we spent together at Georgetown, and I will miss her. Count on my thoughts and prayers for you during this difficult moment. With love,
Sarah Krokey

Dear Peggy, Tom and family,
We recall Kathleen’s gentle and heart warming nature, her sense of humour and engaging smile. In any Girl Scout situation, her Benz wisdom was
on target.

Words are of little consequence when tragedy such as this occurs. Although it has been many years since last we met and spoke, I have always had great respect for both you and Tom, and in turn, for the children who have blossomed into maturity, and now represent both of you.
I know that it will be your faith in God that helps you in this most difficult time, and I send the most heartfelt sympathy from Rhonda, Ian and myself, in your hour of grief.

Dear Peggy & Tom,
Mother & Dad Balshi called me here in St. Paul the moment they heard of Kathleen’s death.  We were shocked !  Shortly after, Mother & Dad forwarded the printed obituary and it has sat on my desk all summer, beckoning me to grieve and mourn and pray with you.  We only met the first two of your children before you moved to London, and now, looking at Kathleen’s picture, she is the "beautiful image of her mother" with the same glowing smile we remember.  Who can comprehend the enormous sadness a parent feels in the loss of a loved child?  We have been holding all of you in our prayerful hearts from the first moment we learned of this family tragedy.  But, our Christian faith assures us that Kathleen now enjoys the eternal eucharistic embrace of our Risen Savior.  "May your tears be soon turned into dancing!"
Love & prayers,

Kathleen was my camp councilor at ASL when I was four until I was seven. She was a very kind and generous person and was also very helpful. One day when I was five, I had a bad morning and I was very sad. When Kathleen saw my face, she knew something was wrong.  She asked me and I told her and she hugged me and told me how much fun we would have that day.  She told me everything we were going to do, which cheered me up. I didn’t just have an okay day, I had a very fun day. She was one of the best camp councilors I would ever have. I hope God blesses your family and helps you like Kathleen helped me.

Love,
Darby Gillett , Age 10
New Hampshire

Deep peace of the flowing wind to you,
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you,
Deep peace of the shining stars to you,
Deep peace of the gentle night to you;
the moon and stars pour their beaming light on you,
Deep peace of Christ, the light of the world,to you.

My deepest sympathy to all,
love ,Marie Meehan

Her life is changed, not ended….

Heartfelt condolences from the Midon Family.

I last spoke to Kathleen outside Healy Hall in August, 2007. She was in her element at Georgetown, so obviously happy to remain part of the community she came to love as a student. She radiated joy that day, just as she had every summer morning in London when she greeted the ASL summer campers and loaded them onto the bus. I feel fortunate to have known her. Cait and Darby recognized how lucky they were to have a role model like Kathleen.  Anyone who says empathy can’t be taught obviously never saw Kathleen interact with these children. Her legacy of kindness endures, but what a void her absence creates, for Georgetown, her friends, but especially for you, her family. I came to Kathleen’s funeral afraid to witness such profound grief. I left grateful to have witnessed such profound love. And still, my heart breaks for you all.

Kathy Gillett with love from Bill, Austin, Brendan, Cait and Darby

Our deepest and sincere condolences to you and all the family.  Our prayers and thoughts are with you at the very difficult time. May your beautiful daughter rest in peace.
With our love.
Moira & Mike Spilsbury.

Impossible to express my shock and grief at the news.  I remember her for so many years as a bright, cheerful girl, with the hair, personality, and smile that brought the sun into each day!  While grateful for the interaction I did have, I am so terribly angry for the loss to her parents, family, and friends.  she was a giving person and was such fun to be around.  It is against nature for the promise to be cut short.  I send my love to all the Benz family and am thinking of you and sharing your grief.  I can only hope that the happy memories of times shared and the love of those around you will help you through this terrible time.
Suzanne Brooks

Dear Kathleen’s family, your pain is our pain and my prayers of patience for the surviving are with you.
Kathleen’s effervescent charm touches many hearts even today and will undoubtedly continue to do so forever.
Love,
Minoo (SFS ’07)

It is so incredibly sad to hear this news. Kathleen was extraordinary – I have met few people as warm and compassionate as she was. Her smile was absolutely contagious! My heart goes out to her family. Kathleen will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

Kathleen was a dear friend of ours from Georgetown.  In fact, she was one of the first people we ever met there, as she was part of our freshman orientation group.  After that, we have many happy memories of retreats and 8pm mass with Kathleen, as well as just having fun, celebrating birthdays and holidays, and growing together over our four years.  Kathleen was always kind, fun, thoughtful, and a model of how to live out her Catholic faith.  We are especially honored that she sang at our wedding.  We will always love her and miss her very much.
Nichole and Joe Saboe

To the Benz Family:
I had the good fortune to meet Kathleen on the Spiritual Refreshment retreat our first year at Georgetown. Our paths continued to cross throughout our four years, most frequently at the 8 PM Mass we both loved so much. One of our favorite songs at that Mass was "We are One Body." Listening to it after I heard of Kathleen’s passing, I was struck by one particular verse:

"I have come, your Savior, that you might have life,
through the tears and sorrow, through the toils and strife.
Listen when I call you, for I know your need,
come to me, your shepherd, for my flock I feed."

I cannot think of anyone who is a more certain entrant to heaven than Kathleen – I know that she is truly enjoying her eternal life. While it is hard for those left behind, this song reminds me that we are all being watched and protected, even thorough the "tears and sorrow". My thoughts and prayers are with you and all who loved Kathleen.

No words can describe how sadden we all are, in the death of Kathleen.   She was not only special to your family, but obviously to so many others,  whose life she has touched in some special way.
May God be with you all in your grief,  and give you the strength you need to endure this loss.  We will be coming down to Lancaster to be with you during this time. We have so many happy memories of your whole family during our time in London, those happy memories will never leave us, or the love she had for all of you. God brings you to it, he’ll bring you through it.
Fondly
