Joseph H. Schreder, 71
Joseph H. Schreder, 71, of Lancaster died suddenly on Thursday, March 29, 2007.
Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late George and Teresa (Hecker) Schreder.
He graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School in 1953, attended Lancaster Business School and served in the US Army from 1958-1960.
He started working in the restaurant business in high school and continued throughout his entire career. He was affiliated with The Glass Kitchen of West Chester, PA and of Glassgow, DE before becoming the owner and operator of The Glass Kitchen at the Willows, a combination 200 seat restaurant and 33 room motel in Lancaster, PA in 1976. He and his wife, Ann, ran “The Willows” for over 20 years until it was sold in 1996.
Despite being an amputee, he was an avid rider of a hand-cycle on which he logged over 20,000 miles on local roads over the last few years. He was also an active swimmer and he enjoyed extensive travel; he particularly enjoyed spending time at the family’s residence in Myrtle Beach, SC. He was a big sports fan, an avid Red Sox fan, and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. In his spare time he served as a counselor for fellow amputees. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and was a founding member of the Friends of St. Anthony’s, a successful fundraising group over the past 29 years.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Ann H. Schreder, two sons, Michael J. Schreder, married to Lauren (Lombardo) Schreder, of Charlotte, NC, and Stephen J. Schreder, married to Maria (Gruccio) Schreder, of Radnor, PA, and six grandchildren, Caroline, Joey, and Emily, children of Michael, and Andrew, Anthony and Nicholas, children of Stephen. Surviving in addition are his uncle Victor Hecker of Millersville, his brother George J. Schreder of Lancaster, brother Charles J. Schreder of Newark, DE, sister Geraldine (Schreder) Walter, wife of Robert Walter of Lancaster, and numerous cousins.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 501 E. Orange St., Lancaster on Wednesday at 12:00noon. A viewing will be held at Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home and Chapel, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz on Tuesday evening from 7:00pm until 9:00pm. The Rosary will be recited at 8:45pm on Tuesday evening. Another viewing will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday morning from 10:30am until 11:30am. Interment in St Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery.
