Joseph A. Eder, 92

Joseph A. Eder, 92, of Lititz, passed away peacefully in his sleep, on Thursday, January 12, 2023 at St. Anne’s Retirement Community.

Born a U.S. citizen in Lancaster, PA, to parents Peter and Maria (Geschwind) Eder, he moved back to Germany, and was raised in the little village of Grossmeiking, before coming back to the states in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he was stationed in Munich. After his honorable discharge, he served for 6 years in the reserves.

A skilled carpenter by trade and occupation, he worked first for Wohlsen and then for Warfel Construction for over 40 years. After his retirement, he was still called on job sites for Warfel because of his skill. He often did carpentry/construction work on his and his children’s homes, for which they are very grateful.

Prior to his death he had the distinction of being the oldest living member of the Lancaster Liederkranz, the German-American club, where he enjoyed playing cards and participating in curling games in the winter. The Lancaster Liederkranz is where he met his wife “Nelly”, Kornelia J. Raschke, and they celebrated 54 years of marriage prior to her passing in 2010.

A member of St. James Catholic Church, Joe was pre-deceased by his daughter Cornelia, his wife, and brothers Alfons and Peter. He is survived by sons Joseph P., husband of Huini (Jingchun Guo), Harrisburg, John A., husband of Cynthia (Charles), Lancaster, and Michael Eder of Lititz. Grandchildren:Craig, Steven, Yuxing, Allison, Maggie, Lily and a great granddaughter Clementine. A sister Maria, brothers Georg and Alois, Germany. A cousin Anna Van Dyk, York and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at St. James Catholic Church, 505 Woodcrest Ave, Lititz, with Rev. Ryan Fischer as Celebrant.
A visitation with the family will be held prior to the service from 9:30 AM -10:30 AM at Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz. Interment will follow at St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to either St. Anne’s Benevolent Fund, 3952 Columbia Ave, Columbia, PA 17512, or Hospice & Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604.

Condolences to the Family

I worked with Joe for many years at Warfel Construction. His carpentry skills were second to none, and he was always so calm and in control. He was often called upon to do the most difficult jobs, but his quality was always excellent. Joe was a fine gentleman.

Jeo, John, Michael,
So sorry for you loss.  I have fond memories of your whole family growing up on Orange St.  Especially one of your dad teaching me to use a hand saw when he was rebuilding our cellar stairs. I was about 6 years old.
