John F. Haser, Jr.

January 28, 2017

John F. Haser Jr., 85, of Lancaster, entered into rest on January 28th, 2017, surrounded by his family. Born in Arnold PA, he was the eldest son of John F. Haser Sr. and Hazel Baldwin Haser Moore of New Kensington PA. He was raised by his father and stepmother, Josephine Zydel Haser. His aunt, Lyda Haser Custer, was also a very important part of his life. He was also the loving brother to two sisters and four brothers: Shirley, Lyda, Tom, Woody, Jim, and Dave.
John’s life was marked by a strong devotion to family and community. He is survived by his loving wife Anne Goodhart Haser and children: Joanne Madonna (Mike), Mary Anne Haser, Lisa Madonna (David), and John Haser III (Bethena). His greatest joys were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Shawn (Kerry), Tyler (Kara), Kaylin, Kyle, Hanna, Evan, Ashton, and Cutler.
He attended the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and served in the Army during the Korean War from 1953-1955, while watching over a U.S. armory in Germany.
John was a lifelong advocate for working people, working for the United Steelworkers of America for 42 years before retiring in 1996. He started his career as a union representative and was later promoted to Assistant District Director of District 10 based in King of Prussia, PA. Following his retirement, he volunteered his services for local companies including Hamilton Technologies where he was a consultant helping to negotiate labor relation contracts. He was also a highly-regarded member of the Democratic committee of Lancaster and ran for the 100th District House seat in 1998.
He was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan, supporting the Panthers, Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates. He served as the first coach of the Millersville University Soccer team from 1960-1963. He was also the head coach of the Columbia Red Raiders, a semi-professional football team, from 1962-1964. In later years, he took great joy in coaching and watching his children and grandchildren in various sports.
John was a strong believer in continuing education. He had a passion for learning and encouraged others to learn as well. His favorite interests included crossword puzzles, politics, and American history, especially the Civil War.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the United Steelworkers District 10 Education Fund, 1945 Lincoln Hwy., North Versailles, PA 15137. Private services will be held at a later date.

Aunt Anne and cousins,
Uncle John was a great man who I have many special memories of especially at the Haser family Christmas at Pappy John’s.  I spent the summer with you and Uncle John always teased me.  I enjoyed every minute of it.  I never have learned to say Lancaster properly.  I am sure him and Mom are together and we are now being watched over by them.  Love you, take care and see you soon.   Mary Lou and Tim
