John E. Barry, 81

John (Jack) E. Barry, 81, of Lancaster, died May 16, 2007 at Essa Flory Hospice Center.

Born in Philadelphia, Jack was the son of the late Edward D. and Caroline D. Barry. He was married to Mary Barry, with whom he recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.

Jack graduated from Central High School in Philadelphia and then served in the U.S. Air Force as an Aviation Cadet during World War II. Afterwards he received his BS in Business Administration from LaSalle University 1949, and his MBA from the Graduate School of Banking, Rutgers University.

Jack began his banking career at Girard Bank in Philadelphia before moving to Lancaster. He started the consumer loan department at the Lancaster County National Bank and later became executive vice president of National Central Bank. In 1976, he became president and chief executive officer of New Holland Farmers National Bank and retired from banking in 1988. He devoted considerable time to community and professional organizations. Jack served as president of the Lancaster Chapter of the American Institute of Banking, the Lancaster County Bankers Association, the Lancaster Retail Credit Association, the RMA South Central PA Chapter, the Optimist Club of Lancaster, and the American Lung Association. He served as a director for the Advisory Committee of Central Atlantic School of Banking, the National Office Management Association, the Credit Bureau of Lancaster County, Old Guard Mutual Insurance Company, Lancaster Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the United Way of Lancaster County. He was an active member of the PA Economy League, the Board of Trustees of the YWCA, the Lancaster Country Club and the Hamilton Club.

Jack was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed golf, hunting, gardening, reading, crossword puzzles and tennis.

In addition to his wife, Mary, Jack is survived by three daughters: Linda M. Barry, Carol A. Emerson and Barbara A. Barry, all of Lancaster; and a son, John E. Barry, husband of Martha May Barry of Lancaster; six grandchildren: Heather, Kelly, Nathan, Hannah, Caroline and Jack; one great-grandson, Andrew; and a brother, Edward D. Barry Jr. of New Jersey.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial on Monday at 10 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 119 S. Prince Street, Lancaster, PA. Friends may pay their respects to the family at the church on Monday from 9AM until 10AM. Interment in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery, Bausman, PA. Please omit flowers; memorial contributions in Jack’s memory may be sent to Hospice of Lancaster County, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125. Charles F.
