What an extrodinary man, it is impossible we will never spend another windy day on Cranberry with you, or that we will not hear that boom of laughter. What a gift to have known you.

The wind blew a little less today across the pool as the lupins fragrance drifted over the seagrass an danced lightly upon the waves then it disappeared on the horizon, I’ll look for you in the tide for the ocean keeps those who loved her close and this old dragon always has time to sit and stare into the abyss.
I’ll see you again on the bridge of choice I’ll look for you my friend. Kenneth W McCafferty

We share in your sadness, Jeanine, Jeff and family. We wanted one more harmonizing session with JD… it was a heavenly gift to sing in our Lyrico quartet (and the Ephrata Cloister Chorus) with JD and you, Jeanine. Our rehearsals were filled with fun, frolic, and companionable singing. JD with a ready chuckle, a listening heart, and music from his soul. Magical times, for sure.
I’ve read the remembrances penned by so many friends… they accurately portray “our” JD. Now he is heaven’s JD, inspiring us still and gracing our loving thoughts of him. Indeed, we were not ready to say an earthly good-bye. Jeanine, Jeff, Lorna, Brandon and Brooke, may God hold you firmly in His almighty hand.

John David was my third-cousin, a dear and cherished friend, godfather to our granddaughter, and one of the very BEST painters I have ever known. He was well-beloved by all his fellow artists at the Art Association of Harrisburg and throughout the Region, and adored by our family. His sudden death last week was a huge shock to us all. My condolences to his sister, her family, and dear Aunt Lorna and Steve. Carrie Wissler-Thomas

It’s been an honor to have known a beautiful person, inside and out like JD. His character & artwork have been so inspiring. I hope his soul is moving on to paint beautiful sunrises & sunsets as there are so many reminiscent of him.

So sorry for your loss. A loss for all artists, but mostly for his family who meant so much to him. I still remember the photos of Brooke and Brandon (about 2 and maybe 8) that JD would pull out of his wallet to show us.
Rest in peace my friend.

Dear JD. You will always bring smiles to the faces of those whose lives you touched. I wish you had not left us so soon. You laughed heartily and gave the best hugs. I will miss you so much. When I look up to the beautiful sky and the blue blue water. Or a field bursting with beauty, I will know you have said hello. Or I may see a figure walking that reminds. me of you. So long my friend til we meet again. 🕊️🦋 ❤️Claire Louise

To those left behind:JD’s last painting excursion to Cranberry Island seemed to have generated the best of his work.In the midst of your shock and grief may you find what you need to deal with the immense amount of art left behind, but mostly may he speak to you once again through each piece.

I first met John David when he was a third grade student at Rothsville Elementary school in my music classes. He was not only a good student, but had an infectious personality and a lovely voice. His vocal addition to my school choirs was a real joy. As years passed I watched JD sing lead parts in Warwick HS musicals with great professionalism for his age. As an accomplished baritone, he could often be counted on to sing with our choirs at Trinity Lutheran in Lancaster when we sang large works. When we remodeled our kitchen in 1992 JD and a friend supervised much of the work. They also painted the interior of our entire house! I thank him everyday when I enter our kitchen. He chose and arranged the tiles on our backsplash and helped to design colors and carpentry. His expertise in design and color are evident everyday. Over the years we were fortunate to have had him in our company as we attended antique shows and house tours. John David was truly a Renaissance man, a fantastic musician and artist. He touched so many lives with his art and his love for all things uplifting!I will miss him and his wonderful approach to life. To Lorna, Janine, Jeff, Brandon, and Brooke, we send our sincere sympathy! Peter and Jane Pippart-Brown

I knew J.D. only through his work. The substance of his paintings speaks volumes to me about his authenticity, love and celebration of the mystery and beauty of life. Condolenses to his family and loved ones for your loss. Peace be with you. David Stier

JD’s death has left us so sad. He was an incredible artist and an even better person. Over the years, Scott and I have been avid collectors of his paintings, and we cherish every piece. We considered him a friend, and my lasting memory of JD will be of his smile and gracious welcome when we would run into him at gallery openings. One of my last conversations with him was about his painting vacations on his beloved island. We are fortunate to have a wonderful painting that was the result of one of his visits there. We send our sincere condolences. Barbara Haverstick

Don’t know where to begin…Still in shock to think I’m in a world without you. Your gentle spirit and always full of good humor made you too good to be in this world. Your talents were unmatched you were the truest representation I’ve ever known of what what I feel an artist is. You lived to paint and painted to live. I send love and condolences to your sister and family and your many friends. May you find true peace and make the next world even more lovely. Will forever think of you as I watch every passing cloud.you will not be forgotten. ❤️

Jeanine, I don’t know if you remember me but I lived next door to your family on Meadowcreek. I have so many wonderful memories of your family. John David brought your mother to visit me not long before she passed and I was so happy to see both of them. She was a special lady and was like an older sister helping me with my pregnancy when i was a first time mom. JD did a water color painting that hangs in my house; this house and painting belonged to the Dundore’s. I could go on but I will just say I am sorry for this most recent loss. (I understand your pain as my husband of 62 years passed in May)

I went to school with JD (college that is), and he was such a protector of me, he in the “gank” were like brothers to me! Many wonderful memories, and we stayed friends since those days! Was lucky enough to see one of his exhibitions! Always looked forward to seeing what he was up to! I will miss your sunsets JD…but hopefully you will create some new ones for us! You will be truly missed!

My deepest sympathy to the family. I treasure the few memories I still have of the family members and the appreciation of his talent. He was able to paint for me a serene landscape of the creek at my log cabin. So grateful to have it. Blessings to the entire family. Brenda Weik Herr

I have so many wonderful memories of JD. My first ‘plein air’ painting experiences were in the class that he taught at the Art Association of Harrisburg. In 2006 we traveled together with Earl Blust and William Kochur for a month of painting through England. A very special time indeed, London, Salisbury, Canterbury and Yorkshire. Our collective work was featured in a very successful exhibit at the Art Association in 2007. There were also trips to Cape Cod with the Seven Lively Artists. JD also exhibited with me when I hosted a Summer Soiree in 2016 for the Art Association. I will miss seeing his latest gorgeous sky paintings. I treasurer the time I spent painting with him.

Dear John, Our continuous comments about our newest paintings, painters, inspirations, sunsets, clouds, fields, will just have to take on another form now. I do not like this change and have taken it hard, as does your vast community of painters you formed over decades. You had more paintings in you. I recently reminded you of our visit at your home in vivid detail that you loved. In my mind you will continue to be the quintessential painter, lover of landscape and big wide open skies, and kindred spirit-painters. Painting is a very solitary way of life but you united so many of us as though we could hold each other while spending all that time alone as a way of life. I am so sorry you left too soon. Lorna
