James R. “Jim” Nuss, 90
James R. “Jim” Nuss, 90, of Lancaster, passed away on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at the Hospice & Community Care, Mount Joy. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Harry and Emma (Brubaker) Nuss.
A US Navy veteran of WWII, Jim was one of 30 out of 146 men who survived the wreckage of the USS St. Augustine that plunged into the frigid Atlantic and sank in 7 minutes. He jumped off the sinking gunboat and plunged into the icy water. In order to survive, he kept swimming and moving until the USS Thetis crew rescued him.
Jim was an avid golfer. He enjoyed horse racing and going to the Delaware Park and Hollywood Casinos. He was a Phillies fan and played softball and baseball with the local teams.
Jim is survived by his brother, Lloyd W. Nuss of Lancaster, 1 sister-in-law, 4 nieces, 2 grand-nieces, 1 grand-nephew and 2 great grand-nieces. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters and 2 brothers.
A Private Graveside Service will be held at the family’s convenience at Riverview Burial Park, Lancaster, PA.
