James “Jim” P. Baron, 63

October 21, 2018

James “Jim” P. Baron, 63, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at Hospice and Community Care in Mount Joy after a 2 ½ month struggle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in Spangler, PA to the late Michael and Helen (Lusick) Baron. Jim marked 43 years of marriage to Gina P. (Weidman) Baron on October 18th.

A graduate of Cambria Heights High School, Jim completed his associate’s degree in electronics at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. He first worked as a machinist and millwright apprentice at the Armstrong floor plant and then as a maintenance mechanic at Kellogg’s for 29 years, retiring in 2015.

Jim was multi-faceted person. He had a passion for cars since boyhood. He loved to restore old cars, the more forlorn they were, the more he wanted to save them. There wasn’t anything he didn’t know about cars, and many people came to him for advice when purchasing one. He volunteered at the Antique Automobile Club of America Museum in Hershey.

Jim was a skilled craftsman who could make or build anything. Give him an idea and he could make it happen. The home he shared with his wife, Gina, had his stamp all over it.
Jim had interest other than cars that many people may not have been aware of, he enjoyed planting flowers from seeds and watching them grow especially his wildflower patches. Zinnias were his favorite flower. He loved their varied and vibrant colors.

Jim had a soft spot for animals, especially dogs and cats. He was comfortable around horses too. His quiet ways put them at ease. Jim enjoyed spending time with Gina and her horse Misty.

Vacations at the beach were a favorite of his, especially Surfside Beach, SC. He enjoyed long walks on the beach, and sitting in a sand chair reading a book. It was one of Jim’s favorite ways to relax.

Jim was a fan of the equestrian sport of three-day eventing. He and Gina attended the three-day event at Fair Hill, MD for many years, as wells as at Lexington, KY.

He also helped at church to sell the grocery cards, helped everyone, was a behind the scenes type of guy, had a great sense of dry humor, and had a Christmas magic tie.

In addition to his loving wife Gina, Jim is survived by five siblings, Susan, wife of Richard Havrilla, Northern Cambria, PA, Patricia, wife of Jack Whittington, Lake Bluff, IL, Kate, wife of David Zelenok, Colorado Springs, CO, Stephen Baron, husband of Peggy, Highlands Ranch, CO and Michael Baron, husband of Christina, York, PA; numerous nieces and nephews and his brother-in-law, Jeff Weidman, husband of Pamela, Lancaster, PA.

A viewing will take place 6-8 PM Thursday, October 25th at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 441 North George St., Millersville, PA 17551. Jim’s family will greet friends 10-11 AM Friday, followed by a Mass at 11 AM, on Friday, October 26th at St. Phillips Catholic Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster, PA 17603. Interment in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jim’s honor to Best Friends Animal Society, 5001 Angel Canyon Road, Kanab, UT 84741 or Red Rose K-9 SAR Team, 431 Weaver Road, Strasburg, PA 17579.

A final good-bye…  We laid you to rest on Friday.  You were at peace surrounded by family and friends.  Hearing the kind words and funny stories from co-workers, The Car Museum friends, and neighbors was heartwarming and I never tired of hearing them.  “A kind person”  “a true gentleman”  ” great sense of humor” were only a few of the genuine comments from all who had the privilege of knowing Jim.  You were truly loved by all, but most importantly, we felt the love and devotion between you and Gina.  You will be missed Jim… and we now have another angel watching over us.    Love and miss you   Sister Sue

To Gina, Mike and the entire Baron Family: My prayers and thoughts are with you during this most challenging time.  I was so blessed to have worked with Jim as one of his supervisors at Kellogg’s for many years.  Always a joy and consistent worker.  Had a very dry but sure sense of humor that helped me get through many days.  Thanks for sharing him with us at Kellogg’s Gina over the years.  We truly were blessed with Jim in our workforce and as a valuable member of our then team.

Our sincerest sympathies go out to the entire Baron and Havrilla families. Both Rick and Diane spoke fondly of him.
